

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carol Perkins Poynor, three children, Helen Crabtree (Reaves), Wilmer Poynor IV (Elizabeth), and Ham Poynor (Kim), eight grandchildren: Reaves Crabtree Jr. (Caroline), John Crabtree, Will Poynor V, Florence Poynor, Virginia Poynor, Mills Poynor, Cain Poynor, and Crawford Poynor.
Wilmer attended Mt. Brook Elementary School, Indian Springs School, and graduated from the University of Alabama. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve Quartermaster Corps and was discharged as a First Lieutenant.
He joined New York Life Insurance Company in 1961 and served clients for 52 years. He served as President of the Birmingham Life Underwriting Association and Birmingham Estate Planning Council. One of his many career highlights was serving as President of the Million Dollar Round Table in 1986.
He was a member of the Monday Morning Quarterback Club, serving as Treasurer for 30 years. He loved the Birmingham community, with roles in Leadership Birmingham, St. Vincent’s Hospital, Birmingham-Southern College, United Way of Central Alabama, Alabama Symphony and numerous other charitable organizations.
He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and served as a Lay Administrator, Junior Warden of the Vestry, and Finance Committee.
The family suggests that memorials be made to St. Luke’s Foundation, 3736 Montrose Road, Birmingham, AL 35213 or a charity of your choice.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, January 6, 2020 with visitation in Graham Hall at 2:00 p.m.
