Mary Theresa Smedley

Mary Theresa Smedley (nee Hopkins), 80, of Homosassa, FL, passed away on Fri., Aug. 24, 2012 at Always There Assisted Living, Citrus Springs, FL. A native of Brooklyn, NY, she was born June 2, 1932, one of two children to Luke and Mary Teresa (Duffy) Hopkins. On Sept. 5, 1953, she married her late husband, Eugene Alfred Smedley, in Brooklyn. In her professional life in Brooklyn, she was a partner in a small medical supply business and in 1974, moved to Randolph, NJ and later became Secretary to Director of Admissions at Morristown Beard High School, Morristown, NJ (where it is often joked that the Director of Admissions worked for Mary). Mrs. Smedley moved to Homosassa in 1996 and was a parishioner of St. Scholastica Catholic Church in Lecanto. Mary is survived by son Kevin Eugene Smedley and his wife Maureen (Hickey), Warrenton, VA; daughter Karen Lynn (Smedley) and her husband Robert (Brooks) Estero, FL; grandchildren Kerri Smedley and her husband Dan Witalec, Shaker Heights, OH; Kevin Andrew Smedley and his wife Michelle (Costello), Alexandria, VA; Kenneth Patrick Smedley; Damian Robert Brooks, Rhiannon Terese Brooks, and Orlaith Mairead Brooks, all of Estero, FL; great grandchildren Ella Elaine and Claire Elizabeth Witalec; sister-in-law Marguerite Gilbertson, Manchester, NJ; niece Helene Woodhams, Tucson, AZ and nephew Christopher Hopkins, River Vale, NJ. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smedley was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Alfred Smedley and brother John Joseph Hopkins. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tues., Sept. 4th at 10:00 A.M. from St. Scholastica Catholic Church, Lecanto, with Fr. Tom Spillett, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, at 12:30 P.M. Friends will be received at Wilder Funeral Home, Homosassa, on Monday, Sept. 3rd from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. where vigil prayers will be held at 6:30 P.M.
