There are some people who have sun inside them. It’s hard to explain. Their presence just brightens the world around them. It is not just a kind and caring smile; they have an internal being that sheds light and warmth. It is certainly a calming energy, but most importantly it’s not wanting anything back in return. This was our Mom.
Patricia Ann (Alward) Casey of Homosassa, Florida passed away on June 20, 2024. A native of Webster NY (near Rochester), she was the oldest of 3 children of her Irish/Canadian father Patrick Alward and her German mother Clara Hape.
Pat graduated from Our Lady of Mercy High School 3 weeks after her 17th birthday and soon joined the work world as a secretary. One of her work friends, Eleanor Casey (Chilbert) set her up on a blind date with her brother. That date worked out and she married former Marine Robert Emmett Casey on June 4, 1957. They soon built a house in Spencerport, NY and had their 4 children in 5 ½ years there. The clan moved to Pittsford, NY in 1973.
She became the biggest Pittsford Mendon High School sports fan ever, cheering all her children to championship winning sectional teams. She continued to go to school games for years after her kids graduated. She worked in the Pittsford School District for many years and was beloved by all her co-workers, from the School Superintendent to the mechanics who fixed the school buses. She never had to clear the snow from her car or the walkway when she left work on a snowy winter day.
She was a “cool Mom.” She could cook, bake, make clothing, was a master of the lost art of darning socks, knitting, crocheting and she loved to play euchre. All her children’s friends loved her and would visit her when she worked at the High School or would just stop by the house to see her. Everyone could discuss any topic with her without judgement, and many asked for her advice. She was a great friend to acquaintances of all ages.
Pat took up the game of golf in her early 40s and became quite good. She could occasionally shoot in the 80s and sometimes beat her husband. She and Bob were longtime members of Monroe Golf Club in Pittsford. After retiring, they had a home built on a golf course in Homosassa, Florida in 1997 with other Monroe friends joining them. She lost her husband Bob in April of 2009 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Throughout her life, Pat always got involved with people and groups who made a difference in their community. She was a devout Catholic and was always involved in her Church. She was past president and active member in P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) where women motivate, educate and celebrate women. The Red Hat Society was always a fun time for her as well.
Her 7 Grandchildren adored their “Mimi,” and she excelled in her role of loving and spoiling them. She also enjoyed the ongoing entertainment of watching her children raise theirs.
Pat found love again and married Thomas Caveny in August of 2013. They had over 10 years together filled with love, travel, golf, and grandkids. They enjoyed bringing both families together for an annual gathering with all the children and grandchildren. Unfortunately, she lost her beloved Tom in December 2023.
Pat is survived by her 2 younger brothers: Richard Alward, his wife Jean and their children and grandchildren, Robert Alward, his partner Susan and his children and grandchildren.
By her example, Mom taught us the best qualities of human nature; unconditional love, patience, forgiveness, encouragement and kindness. She is also survived by her 4 children; her son Tom, wife Linda and son RJ; her son John, wife Laura and sons Jackson and Patrick; her daughter Carolyn, daughter Dr. Mary Grace Charleton and son Daniel, and her son David, wife Christine and sons Petty Officer 2nd Class Nolan and Palmer.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will take place on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, from 11:00 until 1:30 P.M. at Macrini-Wilder Funeral Home, 4890 S. Suncoast Blvd., in Homosassa, FL. Please join us if you can, to celebrate this beautiful woman!
Tom Casey, John Casey, Carolyn Charleton and David Casey
