Alice Yuriko Fu

Alice Yuriko Fu, aged 97, died peacefully at Pohai Nani Care Center on July 25, 2024. Born and raised in Paia, Maui, she attended Maui High School and graduated from St. Francis Nursing School, fulfilling a wish of her father.

Her perky personality and happy demeanor persisted through her life. She enjoyed being a song leader in high school and a caring Registered Nurse during her 30 year career. She worked at the Hawaii State Hospital, Queens Hospital and Maluhia Hospital where her soft heart and skilled experience enabled her to provide loving care to her patients. A strong advocate of patients' dignity and rights, she later assumed the role of a Nursing Supervisor. She also helped start the Hawaii Nurses Association union.

She raised four children and babysat the oldest of her grandchildren. Although blind later in life, she burst forth with the same confidence as a sighted person, surprising many who did not realize she was blind. In her eighties, she could still do chin-ups, without gloves, on tree branches. Such an amazing lady.

Her close relationship with her oldest grandchild, Alena, lasted until her passing.

A favorite memory of Alena's was when she confided to her grannie that she wanted to become a nurse. Her grannie's surprised response was, "WHY?!" Another favorite memory, is her uncanny ability to wander toward the ice cream whenever shopping. If Alena lost sight of her, she could always find her there.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Fu, her parents, Masato and Hatsume (nee Sano), brothers, Katsuto Saiki and Richard Saiki, sister, Elaine Mimura, and son, Jerry Kobayashi. She is survived by son, Alan (Evie) Kobayashi, and daughters, Gail Robb and Laura Fu; grandchildren, Alena Kobayashi, Brent (Rei) Kobayashi, Kathi Kobayashi, and Kelli Kobayashi; great grandchildren, Hina Kobayashi and Kamryn Aquino.

The family extends their appreciation to Pohai Nani and Hannah Deitch-Cummings for the wonderful care provided to Alice in the last few years of her life.
