I appreciated sharing with Harry the daily things we planned on and discussed through our 65 years together which seemed like only yesterday.  Sometimes it feels like he's still right here with me.

I really missed him driving me all over the place, wherever and whenever we wanted.  He was a good driver, and knew how to get to places using all the short cuts.

In his later years, one of Harry's favorite things to do for our family Christmas parties was to wrap up a whole bunch of his little 'mail-order' free gifts he collected that year to pass out to everyone for grab bags.  We looked forward to those grab bags and had lots of fun opening his fun gifts!

Although I miss Harry terribly,  when I have those sad moments , I remember that he's in Heaven having fun with friends, singing with the angels and playing with our dog daisy, and I can feel happy for him and so thankful to God for our time together on this earth.    There's so many good memories of my dad, it's hard to put down only a few...my dad was fun-loving person who enjoyed spending time with his family and he and my mom would plan many fun outings for us children.
   I remember the many outings to the beach that we looked forward to on the weekends and then going to the movies at the drive-inns.  One of the movies I remember was the dirty dozen.  It was fun sitting on the side window of the car, or on the blanket front of the car when it wasn't rainy.
   We had many enjoyable travels together - once my dad, mom & I went to Canada & Virginia with the Tauck Tours-everything was first class and so good, we felt like kings and queens.
   My dad looked forward to our Saturday outings - he would always be waiting all dressed ready to go hrs., before I came to pick he and my mom up.  He always enjoyed the ride, as we drove to different locations, sometimes we'd do short errands, then find a new restaurant to have dinner at.    Once in awhile, when mom & Jo would go shopping, and dad & I would wait for them at a McDonalds, dad enjoyed just sitting eating his french fries and drinking his coffee, he was content to just sit and watch all the people.
  I'm so grateful for all the fun times we had as a family with my dad and mom and that I was able to spend time with him in his older years.  I will miss my dad!

My Grandfather played a huge part in raising me to be the man I am today. I remember going to Grandma and Grandpa's house from a very young age. Grandpa would take me to the beach, play sports with me, watch TV with me, and teach me various things. He had a love for raising plants and herbs. I remember when he showed me how to ferment the Noni juice and how I could never get over the smell. Some of my favorite memories with my Grandfather are of when I helped him with the plants he raised on his lanai. I would be constantly attacked by mosquitoes while he was seemingly unfazed.

I will always remember my Grandpa as a joyful man. He would laugh at everything, especially if he was the butt of the joke. He tried his best to make every situation bright even if it meant he would get cramps later on. I will forever miss his uplifting spirit. I know he is laughing and smiling at us with the Lord by his side. I pray that I would use my life to help others just as my Grandfather did.

My Grandpa and I had a special bond. He always believed in me, and that meant so much to me. When he got older and physically weaker, he needed to go through rehab several times, and I noticed that he always really tried his best. He never complained and he always had a good attitude. 

I have so many great memories of my Grandpa. He used to pick me up from school everyday and he helped to make it possible for me to graduate from Biola University.

After I graduated from Biola in 2014, I interviewed my Grandpa with the plan to make a documentary about him. He was so eager to help me and he even gave me his personal journals to read. I remember feeling so honored that he trusted me with that. 

As he got older, the time came for him to stop driving, and he blessed me by giving me his car. I think of him often when I drive it.

I have great memories with him when we would take our trips to Turtle Bay. He showed our family a special fishing area on the property that had a wall that we could fish over. That place is sacred to me. He also took me and Jeremy to the beach a lot in the summers when I was growing up.

I remember that he was there to see me when I played the best basketball game in my life. My other family members were busy that night, so he was the only one who got to see it. That made me happy.

He was always in my life. So much of who I am is because of him. I owe him so much and I hope to make him proud.

I have shared experiences with Harry Tanoue that go back to 1981. That is when I started to date his daughter, Jill.

Harry was already very knowledgeable about the use of natural herbs that help our bodies lower blood pressure and strengthen our immune systems. It was at this time that he introduced me to wheat grass extract and insisted that I drink it when I came to see Jill. I drank it, although I didn't like the taste.

As the years passed, Harry eventually started his own garden of herbs, and he carefully dried, and packaged herbs to give to many people at our church, especially the choir members. He would pass out the herbs, along with instructions on their use for specific ailments.

Harry and I were in the choir for quite a few years, and we participated in many choir productions, including the Singing Christmas Tree and the Easter productions. When my wife, Jill, and my sister-in-law JoAnn were in the choir, we sometimes practiced our parts together, at Harry's house. Jill sang soprano, JoAnn sang Alto, I sang tenor, and Harry sang bass. In fact, he was the leader of the bass section.

I spent many hours with Harry before and after choir rehearsals, or productions, having a meal, or coffee, at Zippy's restaurant.

We shared a common interest in fishing. We managed to go fishing sometimes, with the family.

We also shared an interest in golf. We were able to golf in fundraisers. We even played on Kauai, and at Ko'olina. We weren't very good, but we had a lot of fun.

I keep one of Harry's old clubs in my bag, and I use it on at least one hole each round, in memory of him. 

When Harry started to slow down, after his second stroke, I moved his Aloe plants to our house.  I was able to replant them and increase the number of pots. I have started to give Aloe plants away to other people, to continue in Harry's tradition of blessing others.

A day does not pass when I don't think of Harry.

My father laughed a lot.  Didn't take things too seriously.  He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, golfing and fishing.  
I remember he would take us to north shore to look for puka shells and started to make necklaces out of them.  He would polish the clam shells also.
He loved the simple foods like vienna sausage and rice and would prepare musbi's with spam and vienna sausage and packed them for a day at the beach.  

A simple man, gave more than he took and was always friendly to everyone that crossed his path.

As a teen, he taught me how to drive and would always lend me the car to attend all my dance contests and  I remember coming home at 5am once and he usually leaves to work around that time.  And all he said to me was, Eh.  And off to work he went.
There were times I would use his car during the day and pick him up at work.  He was such a hard worker and well liked by his peers.  Always smiling saying hello to the tourist.

He always gave it his all with everything he did.  When he joined the church choir, he would always be singing at home practicing.
He enjoyed it a lot.

I'm so glad he lived all his talents out and shared his joy with my family and those around him.  

I will always remember my Dad as a fun loving father who laughed more than he cried. 


Dad always had a way of  cheering me up when he could--I still remember a day when I was sick from school, and he took me to one of those kahala beaches through a private road.  Sitting on the sand under a shade, beautiful blue sky, and watching the ocean waves and people walking their dogs...it was such a healing experience, for my spirit, soul and body.
  Even with his 'rough edges' in our younger years, he tried to do things to  encourage and create fun memories for us.  Both he and my mom would take us on many fun outings to beaches, having picnics, camping, fun shell-picking projects, and enjoying outdoor drive-inns to watch movies.
    I was so happy when he accepted Jesus as his Savior on that Sunday morning at church!  When he joined the choir, it was such a joy seeing him singing his heart out.   I can still hear him practicing his music in the car when we waited for my mom to finish work.
   We all looked forward to our family Christmas parties where dad would bring his wrapped up fun grab bag surprise gifts to pass out to everyone.
    If he were still here, I'd want to tell him again , 'Dad, I love you so much, you're the best dad anyone could have!."   

  At times I can still hear his laughter-now preserved in one of Zachary's creative videos.  His funny and adventurousness stories that morphed through time, his petite glass jars filled with dried medicinal leaves made for the benefit of others , and his appetite for desserts..his devotion to God and family, his adapting to life's difficult challenges with dignity and cheerfulness, and his kind and welcoming spirit to friends and strangers - those are the things which come to mind when I think of Dad.
   When I remember them, I smile in my mind and heart and am grateful to the Lord to be a part of his 'ohana'.   Love, Patty

Taught us how to fish w/bamboo poles at Aloha Tower pier.  When we caught 'Oahu' he was patient in unhooking our lines from the rocks.  Took us crabbing off Waialua River bridge.  Taught us how to dig for sand turtles.  Took us to Maile beach to gather puka and paper shells and mom and dad showed us how to sort and string the shells into beautiful necklaces.  Taught us how to pick and eat opihi and pipipi shells, also sand papered and shined opihi shells into nice jewelry as well as kukui nut leis he polished himself.  He showed us how to husk coconut and made delicious baked coconut candy.   
Dad also taught us how to swim by tossing us into deeper waters and told us to paddle like doggies or just float.  He made sure we showered after swimming (we didnt look forward to the cold shower!) but he didnt mind our wimpers as we felt like ragdolls as he rubbed at the salt and sand from our hair and bodies w/his strong hands.
It was fun going with dad taking tourist sightseeing around the island for free.

   Harry used to love to go to the beach and take us with him, me Roy and my nephew Wayne.  He would take us to Makaha Beach where we would enjoy lunch and spend the entire day at the beach.  Harry was good-natured, had a great sense of humor and always laughed, smiled and giggled.   When I used to talk to him, he always giggled and laughed which made me feel good.  
     One time we had a Christmas party at Kiyos house and Harry's family came as the 7-dwarfs from Snow White and they won the first prize.  
    Harry also had a white dog and I remembered watching him train his dog when we would have dinner with the family, we would sit on the floor.  Unfortunately for the person sitting  next to the rice cooker never could eat because they always had to pass the rice around.  
   As a family, we were very close and Harry was one of grandmas favorites because he had five children.  Grace, Edith and I would go to visit him at Kukui Gardens and Amy would cook us dinner and she was a very good cook - boneless chicken w/mushroom soup that she baked in the oven.  We would go there every time to visit Harry and his family, even in Salt Lake, when they lived there.
   I used to babysit Jill, Joann, Rodney and Russell and sleep over their house when Harry and Amy would go to work.
   We will always remember Harry in our hearts and we will see him in our dreams.  Until we meet again, Harry.

I am so grateful for dad and mom for all their help as we raised our sons.  I remember when they were babies/toddlers they would baby sit them all day while we went to work.  After work when we picked them up, they were fed, bathed and ready for their bedtime ritual.  
When they started school, My dad would help us by picking them up after school and taking them for snacks, sports practices, music lessons, etc.  Not to mention, the many weekends that they willingly baby sat for us so we could attend social and ministry events.
God blessed us with such wonderful parents and awesome grandparents to Jeremy and Zachary.
I remember my dad, Harry Eiichi Tanoue as:
A man who loved the Lord Jesus Christ.  He was a carpenter, produce businessman, salesman, gardener, fisherman, golfer, boxer, musician, leader, singer, pool player, bowler, servant of God.  He gave us and many others so much love and joy.  He was kind, soft spoken, generous, self less, giving, patient, humorous, fun loving, and gave us many wonderful memories.  He set such a great example of the joy of serving Jesus.  He loved and enjoyed being with his family.  We will miss him greatly.  We love him so much.
See you dad, when we are re-united!

I remember “JoAnn’s dad” as the most light hearted, sweet and kind father, since I met him back in the late 70’s.   In contrast to my own quiet father, he was always smiling and happy go lucky, so it was so easy being around him and his wonderful family.  “JoAnn’s Dad, thank you for treating me so kindly, I will never forget you”.   To the entire family, my deepest condolences… we know that you will all be reunited again one day and may God hold each one of you closely.  "JoAnn's dad" radiated with such a bright light and he was a great example of how we should all treat each other.  Much love to you all always, Linda Gray

I remember Harry  from church choir as a happy, positive person always.  He is always kind and fun loving with everyone.  He has a good heart that blesses everyone around him.  He is a man of God with his family that loves the Lord together.  Praise the Lord Harry led his family in the Lord and in the Church.  He has left a legacy for his family and ran the good race.
