Dear Manag Rose & Family,

  With deep regrets,  I will not be attending cousin Hernando's funeral services.

  I was reminded of a promised commitment I made before and I cannot get away from it.  I'm very sorry!

   Anyway, he will be remembered.  I saw him few months ago and I want to remember him the way I saw him last.  Glad we took pictures when you, he and family came to Hilo.  These pictures will remind me of manong Hernan and family and Memories.

   He was special to us.  My mom enjoyed his coming to see her and working together out in our big yard and garden.

   He would "shoo-o" mom into the house and tell her to cook rice.  With little argument, she'd listen.

   He loved going to Suisan Fish Market to see what kind of fishes the boats had brought in and he would buy.  And, of course, we had fresh fish for dinner and the next day lunch.

   Going home time was difficult for my mom wanted him to stay longer.  Mom would tell him to call you, Manang Rose to come to Hilo.  He would say; "she no like come."

   This I want and will remember his being around.  He'll be on vacation to me and will be around.

   Dear family, in a way I am glad I won't have to say good-bye to him, but remember the surprised look and yours Manang Rose at Kuhio Grille Restaurant.

   I love you all.

   An offering of 3 days Holy Mass will be celebrated for him.

   P.S.  Let's be happy for him, he'll be with my mom, dad, and Aunty Paula.

Fill not your hearts with pain and sorrow but remember me in every tomorrow.  Remember the joy, the laughter, the smiles, I;ve only gone to rest a little while.  Although my leaving causes pain and grief, my going has eased my hurt and given me relief.  So dry your eyes and remember me not as I am now, but as I used to be; because I will remember you all and look on with a smile.  Understand in your heart, I;ve only gone to rest a little while as long as I have this love of each of you, I can live my life in the heart of all of you.

                                                       My Grandpa

   One change that happened in my life was my grandpa being diagnosed with lung cancer.  Whenever I went to my grandma and grandpa's house he would be coming home from drinking coffee at McDonald's in the Kamehameha Shopping Center.  He would then read his morning newspaper until 8:00.  After that, he would go to the back of the house to clean his vegetable garden that my granny now takes care of.  I would always help him clean his garden.  My grandpa grew okra, lima beans, eggplant, bitter melon, ginger, and cherry tomatoes.  I remember helping him pick the lima beans and then taking them out of the greeen colored skin.

I loved to eat his Filipino vegetables from his garden with pork.  My grandpa would always cook me Filipino food.  I also remember when I was small and he would ask me to crack his back by stepping on it.  My grandpa would always joke around with me especially when he picked me up from school.  Some of these things changed when he was diagnosed with lung cancer.  When I found out, my heart immediately dropped and I felt tears ready to burst out of my eyes.  The news was spreading thoughout the family and neighbors.  He decided to have surgery to take it out of his body.  The doctors decided to perform surgery as quickly as possible so that the cancer wouldn't spread.

The morning of his surgery,  I remember that I was in summer school and throughout the morning I only thought about what was happening to him and if he made it out okay.  I was relieved the surgery went well.  My grandpa finally went home from Queen's Hospital.  A couple months passed and the doctor gave my granpa the news that the cancer had spread.  His next choice was chemotherapy treatment.  He went though almost all of his chemotherapy treatments and was coming on top with his battle against cancer but his heart was beginning to get weak.

Since they took out about 20% of his left lung, his heart had to work even harder.  He now cannot walk long distances, and has to stop and take a rest every so often.  Anything could happen to him now because his life is so fragile.

I want my grandpa to know that I am thankful for what he has done for me.  I also want him to know how much I love and care for him.  My grandpa will always have a place in my heart.  This is the one thing that changed my life.
