Ka’upena, a dedicated student under the master kumu Mary Kawena Puku’i. During his studies with Kumu Puku'i he mastered five primary styles of ancient poetic chant (mele kahiko) and the ancient instruments that accompany chants and hula.
Each of us have fond memories of Ka’upena. But his contributions to our Culture will continue through his recordings, songs and the authentic sound of his chants. Whether you were able to see him perform, attend his lectures or hear his film narrations, he will be best remembered for his contributions and dedication to Hawaiiana.
A celebration of life is being delayed. Inurnment was private. In lieu of flowers please make donations in his honor with the Hawaiian Historical Society, the Bishop Museum or Kamehameha Schools. He is survived by his niece Sandra Haunani Denhart.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.BorthwickOahu.com for the Wong family.
