Our Shared Remembrances of Sengdao Rattanasamay

Aloha and Sabaidee  Sengdao! 

You will always be remembered for your great sense of humor, life-long devotion to community-building and community service: your advocacy for the under-served and the less fortunate, and your tireless efforts in promoting mutual understanding and mutual assistance among diverse community groups.

Humanitarian - throughout the rural communities across the Vientiane Plain, you will be remembered for your  many years of service, providing humanitarian assistance and community development work during the decade of the 1960's.  

Refugee Resettlement - you will also be remembered for your compassionate service_ to Hawaii's Indochinese, community. When the diaspora of tens of thousands of Indo-Chinese displaced by war began to arrive in Hawaii, you were among the first Indochinese local leaders to organize community-based public and private humanitarian relief efforts to alleviate their pain.  The effective leadership, strong representation and advocacy work by you and your fellow Indo-Chinese community organizers, helped to speed up the resettlement process of thousands of Indochinese resident in Hawaii today.

Empowering Youths - In the 1980's, when studies showed that Laotian American youth in Hawaii were found to be severely under-performing in primary and secondary schools, and grossly under-represented in institutions of higher learning, you were among the first Lao community leaders to pioneer community-based initiatives to promote awareness of the value of higher education among youth and parents. Many of today's young Lao professionals and business owners based in Hawaii were among the youth who benefited from your counsel and initiatives you helped to create.

Heart and Voice for the Laotian Community - Whenever the Laotian community in Hawaii needed a unifying voice for a common cause, an impetus for unity, a shared concern to rally around, or someone to provide healing and understanding, whether in good times or bad times, you were always there to listen and give support.

Sengdao, as you embark on a new stage of your Karmic Journey, please know that you will always be remembered in our hearts and minds.  We are grateful and feel blessed that our lives have been intertwined in so many ways with yours.  The virtues and grace of Metah Karuna you have shared with us will be passed on in perpetuity.

We extend our deepest heartfelt sympathies on the passing of Sengdao. We will always remember him for his continuous support of our family in our pursuit of higher education throughtout the years.  Sengdao and Pathana came to many graduations and always greeted us with a kind smile and a warm handshake.  He will always live on in our hearts and minds and will be remembered for his kindness, compassion, and tireless efforts to serve the Laotian community.

I will miss your kindness, politeness, smart, humor, leadership, compassion, mentorship, adventurous spirit with your family, fairness and positive role model, but most of all will miss YOU, po Dao.  You are everything a man, grandfather and father like myself hoped for. The pathway that you paved is a legacy of helping our people to not just adjust, but changed successfully while keeping our faith, pride and culture. Thank you for your tiredless service, being here for us from the days of resettlement to ROC/MAAC community development, family gatherings with my father, years of Lao/American Graduation Banquets, after retirement to the present... With all love and respect, I love you and cherish your love alongside my two girls KaYing and Lani. We will celebrate your life and how you lived. Kopjai achan, po, luung, ai, thuu Sengdao.
