Shawn had a BIG contagious smile that made everyone around him smile. He was so handsome and always well-dressed. He surrounded himself with family and friends. Shawn was generous, kind, and deeply caring for others. If he took you under his wing, he would mentor you for success. He was playful and so much fun to be with. He always did everything in a BIG way! When he shared, he shared big; when he partied, he partied big. He was sensitive, compassionate, and was always caring for others. If he knew you were down, he would help you up. Shawn had a “Heart of Gold.”
At age 60 years old, Shawn passed away at Straub Medical Center Honolulu on Monday, March 29th, 2021. Shawn was born on August 17, 1960, and was the youngest son of William and Myrna Quiocho. He grew up in Kaimuki behind Waialae Drive Inn with his older brother Scott Quiocho and younger sister Wendy Quiocho Vestal (husband Larry Vestal). Shawn is survived by nieces Kylee Ann Diamond Kaulana Quiocho Kamalani, Kaylen “Tita” Shae Kaimana Quiocho Kamalani, and Rebecca “Becca” Vestal as well as nephew Matthew Vestal.
Shawn was a successful founder, owner, and chef of Cousins Manoa Valley Café. In the early years, Cousins was located on East Manoa Road. It was a to-go plate lunch, next to the famous Designer Anne Namba’s boutique. Shawn later moved across the street known as Kuzins adjoined to 7-Eleven, previously known as Ducky’s, now known as Morning Glass. Shawn’s final restaurant move was to the corner of East Manoa Road and Lowrey Avenue, which is now known as Feast 808. Shawn was successful with his local-kine foods and well known for his ono signature dishes: Beef Stew, Sweet Sour Spare Ribs, Katsu Fried Noodles, Pickled Onion, and Spaghetti Mac Salad. Shawn’s menu also drew the healthier eaters to his restaurant, serving more fish, vegetables, and fruits. Shawn had the main role, actively involved with the day-to-day operations. Shawn provided jobs and opportunities for many people who worked for him and treated employees as family, bringing everyone together as a close-knit working ‘ohana. Work was fun, and hard work was appreciated. One of Shawn’s favorite songs is, “Islands in the Stream,” by Kenny Rodgers, which he played at the end of each workday when everyone gathered around and danced. This became a regular routine - his “Heart of Gold” was so much fun to be around.
The people who worked for him became a big part of his life, and they became lifelong friends. He would often make a deep connection and send pictures to his closest circle of friends. Shawn’s circle of friends, “Da Boys,” lived life together and helped each other grow. Shawn called them “my boys” and the boys called Shawn “our boss.” You were blessed to be in his inner circle because he made sure there was never anything to worry about. Shawn thought two steps ahead and took care of everything, always, across the board, no questions asked, not expecting anything in return. The boys will forever remember how Shawn nurtured, mentored, and paved their way, for a better way of life. Shawn made their lives more fruitful and formed them into the people they are today. Those endless hours of fun, laughter, and sorrow will always be remembered. Shawn, you are our cornerstone, and we’ll remember you for your “Heart of Gold,” your compassion, and all the fun we shared, all the days of our lives.
The night before Shawn’s passing, he was surrounded by family and friends, who prayed with him and sang to him. The heartfelt love for Shawn will follow him forever. Jesus was at his side when he left his earthly life and he will be remembered for his big smile and his love for God. Shawn was a good brother, a proud and cherished uncle, a wonderful son, and a thoughtful, loving friend. He will be missed by many and forever remain in our hearts. His friendship was priceless and irreplaceable because he welcomed you into his family. We will always love you, Shawn, you are a legend, and your legacy will always live on. Shawn’s famous quotes: “automatic,” “go get ‘em, no scared ‘em,” “squash it,” and of course, “Family is everything. Love you. Peace.”
