It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the death of our beloved son and brother, Waymon Lee Roach, 36, who passed away at his home in Honolulu, HI on Wednesday, September 8, 2021. He is remembered as the master of never-ending sarcasm and wit, a worldly adventurer, and a highly regarded cybersecurity expert with an insatiable appetite for knowledge.
Born from the union of Phillip and Sherri Ballard Roach, Waymon arrived on March 2, 1985, and grew up alongside his sister in Houma, LA. He moved to New Orleans after school, beginning one of the happiest periods of his life. Waymon took to New Orleans like a bee to a flower, exploring every inch of the city with a deep passion for understanding its pulse. He quickly became an excellent tour guide to all who visited him.
Waymon’s thirst for exploring and interest in other cultures only intensified as he got older. This led him to spend years off and on overseas, especially in Afghanistan, from where he worked for a decade as a cybersecurity military contractor. At work, Waymon was celebrated as a supportive teammate who brought a positive attitude and sense of humor to each job. He travelled for pleasure in between contracts, only to return home with hours’ worth of thrilling stories from his adventures abroad.
A highly focused individual, Waymon spent copious amounts of time learning purely to expand his knowledge. He was admired by his friends for this trait and was often called upon to settle discussions or clarify facts. This was before everyone carried a digital encyclopedia in their pocket. It wasn’t until years later that they were able to fact-check his responses to find he was still correct at least 95% of the time.
Waymon’s presence, ability to make people laugh, and kind heart will be sorely missed. He is survived by his father, Phillip Roach, his mother, Sherri Ballard Roach, his sister, Brandi Roach, his grandmother, Donna Dockery Ballard, and many, many others who loved him.
A memorial for Waymon will be held Sunday, October 24, 2021, at 11 a.m. at a family home in Gray, LA. Please contact Brandi Roach for more details. Virtual condolences and memories are encouraged at www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/honolulu-hi/waymon-roach-10362228
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Heifer International, a poverty and hunger eradication nonprofit that Waymon supported.
