He was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Ester Matthews; brothers, Ernest Jr., and Donald; and sister, Catherine.
James was a former employee of Roses and Cumberland County Council On Older Adults. He served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Brenda; son, James Jr. and wife Becky; grandson, Jamie and wife Jessica; sisters, Ann Liles, Peggy Tew, and Jean Price; and brother, Roger "Rocky."
A visitation will be held today, Thursday, April 1, 2010, from 7-9 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home in Hope Mills. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 2, 2010 at Mount Carmel Pentecostal Holiness Church on Owen Drive in Fayetteville. Officiating the service will be Pastors Wiley Hughes, Hoover Jones, and Norwood Tadlock. Burial will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park West on Raeford Road. There will be a celebration of life at the church following the graveside service.
