Wilfred was born in Danbury, Wisconsin, in 1927, on a dairy farm built by his father. He was the fifth of six children born to his parents, Henry James Kulbeck and Bertha Ovre Kulbeck. During WWII because of his age, he was the sibling left at home to help his parents run the family farm. After the war, he enlisted in the army and was in the 82nd Airborne Division until he joined the Special Forces in 1963. In the late 1960s SGM Kulbeck served with SOG in Vietnam and then worked at the JFK Center at Ft. Bragg until his retirement from the army in 1974. After his military career, he started his second career with M J Soffe managing warehouses for the company until his retirement in 1992. Wilfred was a Renaissance man who could work on appliances, wire a house, build a house or barn, fix a car, talk knowledgeably on current affairs and generally astound his family with his abilities and knowledge. He was a sports fan, an outdoorsman, an avid reader, a doer of jigsaw puzzles and a wiz at Sudokus. He enjoyed his home and family and keeping his backyard bird feeders well supplied.
Besides his parents, preceding him in death was his wife of 61 years of marriage, Pearl Trogdon Kulbeck, his son, Larry James Kulbeck, brothers, Raymond, Roger, Clifford and Alden, sister, Doris Rieck, and son-in-law, Henry Cuningham. He leaves behind to cherish his memory: daughters, Belinda Cuningham of Fayetteville, and June Millard and her husband, Thomas Millard, Jr., of Wilmington, NC; sister-in-law, Linda Kulbeck of Wisconsin; grandchildren, Lauren White, John Cuningham and Leslie Millard; and a great-granddaughter, Emma White as well as extended family in Wisconsin, Colorado, Washington state and North Carolina. Family was integral to Wilfred’s life, and his quiet presence will be missed greatly by them all.
The family will receive friends on Friday, October 5, at St. Matthews United Methodist Church, 202 Hope Mills Road, Fayetteville, NC, starting at 1 p.m. Funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. at the church. Burial will be at Cumberland Memorial Gardens, 4509 Raeford Road, following the service.
In lieu of flowers please consider donations to a Hurricane Florence disaster relief fund of your choice or a memorial to St. Matthews United Methodist Church.
