

William Stephen Bodner Jr., lovingly known as Steve, born on June 5, 1942, in Anniston, Alabama, passed away on January 22, 2026, at the age of 83. Known for being loving, adventurous, devoted, selfless, faithful, and hard-working, Steve's life was a testament to dedication and service.
Growing up in a military lifestyle due to his father's service, Steve was able to call several places home. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and earned a Bachelor's degree in Humanities and Social Sciences from Oregon State University.
Steve retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 37 years of service in the U.S. Army. His career was marked by his service in Vietnam and numerous accolades, including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (9), Vietnam Service Medal (3 Bronze Stars), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal (with 1960 Device), Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross (with Palm Unit Citation), Army Aviator Badge (UH 1-Huey), Ranger Tab, Airborne Tab, Drill Sergeant Badge, among many others. He was also a respected military historian, focusing on World War II.
Steve was preceded by his parents, Colonel William S. Bodner Sr. and Esther W. Bodner, as well as his sister in law, Connie Hedglin. He leaves behind a legacy of love in his beloved wife, Colonel (Retired) Diana Bodner, his children, Julia Margaret "Peggy" Bodner and Erica Calkins (Brian), five grandchildren, one great-grandson, his brother, David Bodner, and his brothers-in-law, Ron Vogus (Kathy) and Herb Hedglin, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
Steve enjoyed camping, cruising, and traveling. He was an avid competitor in speed walking, participating in 5K, 10K, half marathons, and full marathons, where he won many awards.
He was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church and an attendee of Liberty Reformed Presbyterian Church in Raeford. As a former member of Cross Creek Presbyterian Church, Steve served in the choir, provided meals, set up communion, and worked in the nursery. Steve served his churches with an open heart, devoting himself to Jesus Christ.
Steve's life was a testament of love, faithfulness, servitude, and generosity. He will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege to know him.

The family will accept friends for visitation on Saturday, February 21, 2026 from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Cross Creek Presbyterian Church located at 430 S. McPherson Church Road, Fayetteville, North Carolina. A Funeral Service with Military Honors will immediately follow at 2:00 pm.
