She was loving, fiery, and funny. She was most certainly the woman who would out-think you, out-work you, and insist you stay for dinner.
Ceci lived unapologetically and entirely on her own terms. If she decided she was going to learn something, she did not dabble, she mastered it. Golf, gardening, fishing, construction; it did not matter. She approached each new pursuit with the quiet confidence of someone who understood that competence is earned.
There were those who underestimated her once. There were none who did so twice.
She possessed a formidable mind and razor-sharp wit. She did not need to raise her voice to command attention. In fact, she had a far more efficient method. If you said something foolish, careless, or out of line, she would slowly lower her chin and look at you over the top of her glasses. A steady, unmistakable stare that required no commentary. Her husband, her children, and especially her grandchildren knew it well. They called it the “Gracie Stare.” It was not unkind. It was clarifying. It was the look that said, I expected better and I know you are capable of it. And most of the time, that was all it took.
Ceci’s kitchen was her command center. Cooking was never just cooking; it was precision, creativity, and love expressed through action. She did not follow recipes so much as refine them. To be fed by Ceci was to be seen, welcomed, and very well taken care of.
More than anything, she modeled what it meant to live without apology. She raised children who were taught to think independently, work relentlessly, and never shrink themselves to fit someone else’s expectations.
She made the world more beautiful not by being loud, but by being unforgettable.
Ceci is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband of 51 years, Philip Clay; her children, Kimberly of Denver, CO, Adam of Columbus, OH, and Abigail of Royal, AR; her brother and sister-in-law, Eric and Lynda Jackson of Hot Springs; seven grandchildren, who will forever recognize the power of a well-timed look; and two great-grandchildren.
At the request of the family, services will be held privately at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Garland County Humane Society.
