Charles “Chuck” Hogate (72) passed away peacefully after a difficult battle with mesothelioma. Born in New Jersey, he graduated from Lafayette College and the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business where he met his beloved wife, Terry. His and Terry’s successful careers at Procter & Gamble and Weyerhaeuser brought their family all over the country before ultimately settling in Hot Springs, AR. In his retirement, he and Terry traveled the world. They ventured to new destinations such as China, Peru, and Greece, and they returned time and again to his favorite beaches in Hawaii and Charleston. He was actively involved in Westminster Presbyterian Church where he added his resonant baritone voice to the choir.
Chuck was the ultimate family man; nothing made him happier than showering his loved ones with carefully-selected Christmas presents and riddles about each gift’s contents. He diligently kept Hogate traditions alive with his sister, Debbie, whom he cherished. He eagerly anticipated Terry’s family reunions, embracing her large family as his own. His devotion to his sons was tangible; he supported them in all their achievements, traveled with them to Ireland and England, and always offered them his sage advice.
But most of all, he loved to play. Softball and golf were favorite pastimes; he loved the competition and the camaraderie. His favorite golfing experiences were attending two practice rounds at The Masters’ and playing some of his best golf ever on the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island. Chuck gathered friends and family together for board games wherever he was, even enjoying a game of Quixx in the ICU. His love of play made him an exemplary grandfather. We treasure our fond memories of him building intricate sandcastles, reading stories, collecting stamps, and playing catch with his grandchildren.
He was a powerful presence in every room, but he also listened with genuine interest; we will miss his vivacity dearly. He is preceded in death by his father, Charles, his mother, Frances, and his younger brother Christopher. He is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Terry; their two sons Brad (and wife Annie) and Tyler (and wife Amanda); grandchildren Charlotte, Tommy, and Juliette; and his sister, Debbie.
A Celebration on Life will be held at 2:00 pm, April 1, 2023 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3819 Central Ave., Hot Springs, AR 71913. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church.
