Louis L. Turala was born in Chicago, Illinois, to John Turala and Mary (Stachnik) Turala on September 5, 1928. He and his family lived on the northwest side of Chicago where his parents had a corner grocery store. Lou was a veteran of the Korean conflict. When he got out of the Army, he tried several jobs and then went to school to learn how to be a butcher. He got a job with Jewel Tea and worked in several of their stores. He retired in 1985 and moved to Hot Springs in 1986 to live with his sister Claire Wencel and brother-in-law Emil Wencel who owned the Happy Hollow Motel.
Lou was active with the Cursillo at St. John’s Catholic Church. He was a Eucharistic Minister there and helped with various projects with the Knights of Columbus.
If you knew Lou, you also knew his famous peanut butter cookies. He may have given you a cookie tin of them or some of his homemade Polish sausage.
Lou was a man who if he saw a need would try to fill it.
Lou was predeceased by his parents, his sister Claire and her husband Emil Wencel, his brother Alfred, with whom he enjoyed sharing a birthday, and his brother’s wife Jeanne Turala.
He will be missed by his sister Jan of Ohio, nieces and nephews of Texas: Sancha (Michael Wense), John Turala, Mary (Terry Bates), Michael Turala, and Jill (Rick Waiter), and numerous great and great grand nieces and nephews along with many friends.
