Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.––Psalm 23:4
Bobby Dean Douglas was a lifelong resident of Houma, and the youngest of 11 children. He grew up on what was then called West Park Avenue, and, like the rest of his family, was baptized at New Rising Sun Baptist Church.
Bobby was a graduate of Terrebonne High School, where he was a state tennis champion. He continued to play tennis at Southern University, where he completed a bachelor of science. He went on to complete an associate degree in engineering at Milchen Engineering School in Houston. He worked for more than 30 years at Dow Chemical in Taft, Louisiana, where he retired as a contract administrator, overseeing contractors and safety at the company’s St. Charles Parish location.
Bobby was the life of every room he entered and loved entertaining at his home, especially around Christmas. His legendary holiday parties delighted guests with elaborate decorations, music, dancing, and spectacular food––a lot of which he prepared himself. Like his father and brothers, Bobby was a gifted home cook. He was also a proficient hunter and fisherman, and treasured time spent with family and friends at the family’s fishing camp, and on his boat–– fishing throughout the lakes and waterways of South Louisiana.
He was a very proud Southern University alum who supported local alumni chapter activities and cheered on the Jaguars at the annual Bayou Classic. Mardi Gras was another opportunity for his creativity to shine. For years he joyfully led the family’s “Krewe of Cool Breeze” float in the Crescent City Truck Parade in New Orleans.
Bobby was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, and, especially, grandfather, who had a loving relationship with his grandson, Gabryel.
He is survived by his son, Bobby Douglas, Junior; daughters, Breann Douglas and Vionne Douglas; and a grandson, Gabryel Douglas; brothers, Gerald Douglas, Sr. (Delores) and Benny Douglas; a sister, Carolyn D. Washington; goddaughter, Lynn Pitts; and a host of other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Freddie, Sr. and Helen Willis Douglas; brothers, George Douglas, Freddie Douglas, Jr., Nolan Douglas, Sr., and Donald Douglas; sisters, Annie D. Doss, Marguerite D. Pitts, and Helen Marie Douglas; paternal grandparents, Eloi and Amelia Douglas; maternal grandparents, Harry and Elizabeth Williams Willis; nephews, Nolan Douglas, Jr., Darius Jehan Douglas, and Bruce Wayne Douglas; a great-niece, Ja’Niyah N. Trammell; sisters-in-law, Veranese Evans Douglas, Helouise Hanzy Douglas, Rosemary Gray Douglas, Juanita Mitchell Douglas, and Alma Owens Douglas; and brothers-in-law, Elmer Doss, and Fredrick D. Washington.
