Alton (Al) Emmett Broyles, 86, passed away on May 9, 2010. Al was born in Cherokee, Texas in 1923 to Ben and Esther Broyles. As his father passed away when Al was 10 years old, he grew up with a strong family bond with his brothers Del, Billie Ray, and Ben, and sisters Wanda and Ida Joe. Al married Bertha Martha Pankonien in 1949 and they devoted their 60 plus years of marriage to each other and family. Together they raised 3 children – JoAnn, Allen and Randy, and enjoyed the company of their 12 grand children and 2 great-grand children.
Al proudly served his country in the US Army Air Corp in World War II and was also a Freemason. While in the military he also had the privilege of carrying out civic duties in the Grand Canyon and Carlsbad Cavern projects. After leaving the military, he moved to Houston where he met and married Bertha and they began their family and careers. Al worked for Dentler’s Potato Chips until he retired at age 55. Afterwards they moved to the Lake Conroe area to live on a ten acre farm.
Aside from his family, Al had two passions – golf and a cold beer. He was also very fond of exercising these passions while taking the many family camping trips to the National Parks in the Western part of the United States. As Al aged his golf skills continued to improve and by his mid-seventies had sunk five hole-in-ones. He was a member of the Conroe Country Club and did not surrender his membership until he absolutely had to.
Al will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, brother, and father. He was a good and honorable man, with a strong work ethic and sense of humor. These strong traits continue to be seen and carried on by his children.
