He was a devoted father to Rachel, Sandy, and Al, and a loving husband to Isabel, his wife of 50 years. As a young man, he worked alongside his family as a migrant farmworker in Nebraska, where he learned the value of hard work and working with his hands. He carried that work ethic with him in his later career as a truck driver, building projects around the home, and caring for those he loved.
He lived in Old Town Spring and later in the Kinwood community, where he served as a youth leader in the Royal Ambassadors at La Primera Iglesia de Kinwood. In later years, he briefly attended the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, led by boxing champion George Foreman—who affectionately called him “Champ.”
Alfonso was known for his quiet strength, sharp wit, and his deep love for the Houston Astros. He took pride in his work, his family, and his faith. He carried himself with humility and grace.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Isabel; his great-granddaughter, Celeste (daughter of Nick); his parents, Esteban & Aurelia Garcia; and his siblings: Macario, Enrique, Amelia, Celia, Rosa, & Amalia.
He is survived by his children, Rachel Sotuyo (Daniel), Sandy Gongora, and Al Garcia (Jeannie); grandchildren, Brian, Nick, Savannah, Rafael III, Andres, Joey, and Kasey; great-grandchildren, Sofia, Ariella, Kolt, Kase, Braxton, Camden, and Teagan; and by his sister, Eloisa Morales, with whom he remained close and who was a steady comfort throughout his life. He will be missed by all.
A visitation for Alfonso will be held Tuesday, May 13, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, Texas 77039. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at 10:00 AM, with a committal service to follow at 11:00 AM at Brookside Memorial Park.
