Alix James Washington was born June 11, 1966, the eldest child of Helen Marie Washington and first son of James “Bo” Givens. Being reared by his mother and maternal grandmother, he accepted Jesus Christ at an early age, and as an adult accepted the call to ministry. He was ordained as an Elder in the Church of God in Christ. He was a proud graduate of Kashmere High School, where he explored his gifts in music and athletics. In 1985, he joined the Navy to begin his career of service. In addition to his military accomplishments, Alix held both Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees.
Alix was by nature a caretaker, and committed his career to ensuring that the physical needs of our service men and women were met in every tour and ship assignment. His 20-year career took him around the world, where he developed deep relationships, and grew his extended family. Alix believed in enjoying life to the fullest. When not serving his country or in ministry, he could be found serving up a lot of trash talking at the spades or domino table, all with a side of his greatest cuisine and lots of “Big Wash” love.
During retirement, Alix continued to set sail, as he enjoyed cruises, visiting the New Orleans French Quarter, cheering on his beloved Dallas Cowboys and reconnecting with family. His post Navy career also included serving as administrator for military families and officiating high school football games. Through this and various mentoring programs, Alix was able to pour into the lives of youth and young military families.
Alix loved his family deeply, and made it his business to stay connected to every aspect of his family – be it blood or blended. As an act of service to the matriarch of his family – Bessie Hughes – he served as President of the Hughes Family Reunion for nearly two decades, connecting family members from around the globe and reestablishing a family legacy of love and unity.
He leaves his legacy of love and service to live on in his two children, Tyrinika Marie and Raynal Jeremy, his loving mother, Helen Washington Smith, his wife (1989-2010) and loyal friend – Tina Mapp; four brothers – Carlos (Carol), James Kwame, John Jr., Kenneth (LaKeasha); four sisters – Gwendolyn, Rosalyn, LaToshua, TaShandrea; a special cousin/sister Jessica Adlam; his military family and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
