He was born on January 30, 1937, in Úmbita, Boyacá, Colombia to Miguel Antonio and Ana Josefa Moreno. He spent his childhood there before moving to Bogotá to attend high school. He worked in the area and furthered his studies until he moved to the United States in 1966. He arrived in New York and began working in a factory until he was hired on by a Greek shipping company as a welder. He enjoyed traveling to many ports throughout Europe and the Americas as part of his job.
In 1974, he met Doralice Cálad Bonilla of Cali, Valle, Colombia; they were married in Brooklyn, New York on March 26, 1975. The following January, they welcomed their first daughter, Joanna Karina. He and his young family moved to Texas in 1978, settling in Houston a year later, where they welcomed their second daughter, Maritza Michelle.
Álvaro was undeniably hardworking his entire life, rarely missing a day of work. A very loving, loyal husband and father, he always provided for his family regardless of personal sacrifice. This sense of duty carried over into his role as grandfather. Refusing the idea of his grandchildren attending daycare, he retired in 2006 and dedicated himself to their care and education until the very end. He will be remembered for his selflessness, fatherly advice, and love of coffee; his silly sense of humor brought joy to everyone he met.
Álvaro was preceded in death by his parents, Miguel Antonio Moreno Huertas and Ana Josefa Toro Amaya, older brother, Oliverio Moreno Toro, younger sister, Evangelina Moreno de Zavala, and six siblings who died as infants.
He is survived by his wife, Doralice Cálad of Houston, daughter Joanna Moreno of Houston, daughter Maritza Price and husband Brian of Sugar Land, grandchildren Adriana and Samuel Price, and nephews Edgar and Mauricio Zavala of Mexico City and Oliverio Moreno of Bogotá. Álvaro also leaves behind many close friends and an extensive family-in-law whom he loved dearly, residing in Colombia and the United States.
