Anne Smith Janes passed away peacefully on June 13, 2018, at home with her family. Born outside of Baltimore in Sweet Air, Maryland, Anne was the daughter of Milton R. and Alice Layman Smith. She graduated from Towson High School and then attended Mary Washington College and Bucknell University. At Bucknell, she was active in many organizations, including Tri Delta sorority, and served as President of the Glee Club. She graduated from Bucknell with a B.A. in Music Education. It was at Bucknell that she met her husband, Edwin Janes, with whom she recently celebrated 61 years of marriage. Anne taught music at a number of schools, including Goucher College (Baltimore, MD) and the Peck School (Morristown, NJ), before focusing full-time on creating a rich home life for her three daughters and becoming active in the New Jersey, Dallas, and Houston communities where the family lived.
Anne’s love of and talent for music developed early and continued throughout her life: playing piano in church, leading sing-alongs at parties and at family get-togethers and holidays, and participating in church choir and the Sweet Adelines singing groups. She gave generously of herself as a volunteer for her entire life, serving Meals on Wheels, teaching English as a second language, and volunteering with Christian Community Service Center (CCSC) through church outreach. Anne approached life with great intellectual curiosity and prized her physical fitness, and the self-discipline it required, which allowed her to remain very active into her 80s. She was loved by many friends throughout her years and enjoyed a vibrant life with enduring interests in books, art, theater, music, good food and conversation. She treasured opportunities to travel—especially sharing trips with her husband, Ed, later in life—though she held a special fondness for time spent with family at Galveston Beach (TX) and Bethany Beach (DE).
Anne exemplified the role of what a mother and grandmother should be, establishing long-lasting holiday traditions with her children and grandchildren, holding cooking classes in her kitchen, setting up arts and crafts adventures at the kitchen table, taking the children on fun and exciting outings and always sending thoughtful notes. Anne is remembered by all who knew her as someone who embodied grace and cared deeply about people, an excellent listener who was always aware of what mattered to others: celebrating their accomplishments and special occasions, supporting them through challenges.
Anne was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Betty Smith Green. She is survived by her husband Edwin Janes of Houston, and her daughters and their families: Carol Moya and daughter Anastasia of Austin, TX; Susan Janes-Johnson, husband Scott Johnson and children Roth and Maya of Wilmington, DE.; Betsy Farr, husband David Farr and children Megan, Katy and Jack of Houston, TX. She is also survived by brother Milton R. Smith and wife Carolee (Timonium, MD), as well as many nieces and nephews.
Anne’s family is grateful for the care of her friends and the staff at the Bayou Manor community, her medical caregivers, including Dr. Garth Beinart and his staff, as well as members of the Methodist Hospital community, and end of life care provided by Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care and hospice aides Theresa Boutte Umoren and Deborah Williams, of At Your Side Home Care, Houston.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to a charity of your choosing.
