He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the destroyer, the USS Boyd, and on the submarine, the USS Pipefish, often recalling for his grandchildren both intense and humorous incidents from his submarine service. He married Margaret “Mickey” Hanlon of Shreveport, LA in 1948, having met her while working in the oilfields in Venezuela.
Art worked as a petroleum engineer in Louisiana, Texas and Alberta, Canada. He later owned and operated his own drilling and production company in Houston. He was well-respected in the oil industry and known as a man of his word.
Art was a strong man of faith who delighted in studying God’s Word and regularly prayed for his family and friends. He was a longtime member of Christ Memorial Lutheran Church where he served as an elder. He taught 5th, 6th, and 7th grade Sunday School for over 40 years, making the Bible come to life with his creative, hands-on lessons.
He befriended many young people over the years with his fun-loving ways, while encouraging them with his interest in their lives. He was a devoted husband, an exceptionally supportive father and an extra-special grandfather. He was a loyal friend to many. He will be greatly missed.
Art is survived by his wife, Mickey, and daughters Barbara Strobel and her husband George Bement, Janet Schumacher and her husband Steve, and grandchildren Stanton, Amy and Todd Schumacher, and Aaron, Danny and Joseph Bement.
