BARBARA STRECK YOUNGS SETTLE born in Houston, Texas at St. Josephs’ Hospital on January 31, 1932 went to her peace on February 3, 2012. She was 80 years old. While a native Houstonian, she was raised in New Orleans by her parents, Hicks Louis and May Thiac Youngs, who preceded her in death. Barbara graduated from Ursuline Academy in 1950 and attended Sophie Newcomb College for Women, the coordinate women’s college of Tulane University. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and it was at Tulane that she met C. Dwight Settle, Sr., whom she married January 23, 1953. Putting her education on hold, Barbara and Dwight moved to Houston and began their family of five: Leslie (1954), Cindy (1955), Maggie (1957), Dwight, Jr. (1959) and Dia (1961). Barbara’s marriage ended in 1963, but her real life’s journey began in earnest. While there were many milestones in her life, one of her proudest moments was when she completed her college education and graduated from the University of Houston in 1971. Her life was colorful and certainly never dull. She was a formidable woman who not only touched, but shaped the lives of many…more than she knew. She always talked about the book she was going to write. So many times we heard her say, “I’m going to put that in my book!” That book never did make it to print but it is published daily, in real-time through the lives of her children, her beloved grandchildren Tim, Matt, Dylan, Carey, Jessica, Megan, Harry, Ashley, Patrick, Madison and MacKenzie, and her precious great-grandchildren Hannah, Michael, Charlie, Travis, Lux and Jersey. Let us live well and love each other unconditionally to honor our legacy. God Bless you Barbara and rest in peace.
