On January 5, 2025, Beatriz M de Herrera (age 95) completed her journey to be with the Lord with her loved ones at her side. She has gone on to join her loving husband Jose Ascencion Herrera, twin sons Gerardo Herrera (Jerry), Mauricio Herrera (Mody), brother Arnulfo Mejia and baby sister Josephina Mejia. She is survived by her sister Maria Ofelia Mejia de Flores, daughter Maria Theresa Velasquez (Maite) (Late husband Herman), son Jose Antonio Herrera (Toño), son Juan Manuel Herrera (Meme) (wife Irene), daughter Laura Patricia Rendon (Trisha) (husband Raul “Rudy”), and youngest daughter Beatriz Cedillo (husband Octavio).
Beatriz was born to Arnulfo and Maria Anacleta Mejia on February 6, 1929, in Monterrey, Mexico. She was the eldest of five children and attended the catholic school where her widowed mother worked. She was very charismatic and strong driven, who would help her mother with her daily work and helped care for her siblings. While in school she developed a strong admiration for her the catholic faith, was asked to join the seminary and was accepted. Her mother, eldest brother and reverend mother travelled to the seminary in order to get her registered then be sent to Patterson, Texas or Cuba to be ordained. Regretfully, they had an accident while in route, her brother and reverend mother died at the scene, Beatriz and her mother suffered injuries, the driver was unharmed but was believed to have been driving under the influence. This accident resulted in a new life direction which turned out to be a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother... three generations strong. Beatriz met her husband, Jose through her younger brother, they courted for several years and got married on July 16, 1950, with her mother’s blessing. However, her mother became very ill and required a risky surgery prior to their wedding. So, Jose bowed to support her siblings in efforts to keep the family together. Her mother’s surgery was successful but, nonetheless, Jose kept his promise to support the family without hesitation. Her siblings moved on with their own lives shortly thereafter. Beatriz and Jose had their children, a total of seven (4 boys and 3 girls). They also continued to support her mother, younger sister and her two daughters, Blanca and Carmen. They supported them with unconditional love, as if they were their own and did the same with all their nieces and nephews.
The family migrated to the United States in 1965 and settled in Houston, Texas to start their tile company “Herrera Terrazo & Sons”, Beatriz would manage the books. They also kept their residence in Monterrey to continue to provide housing for their extended family and as a vacation. Like that saying, “You can take the person out of his country, but you can take the country out of his heart!”, this was very true and oh how they loved their “Monterrey”. The bags were always packed and ready to go the minute school let out for holiday breaks or vacation! And the cousins knew it because they were always taking gifts to each and everyone of them. Jose passed away at 61 years old, so Beatriz started working for a small business called Humphrey’s Catering, which she enjoyed it dearly. But the trips didn’t stop nor did the gifts.
Beatriz loved dancing, watching sports and traveling. She enjoyed visiting her sisters, nieces, nephews and cousins in San Diego, Utah and Monterrey. Always taking them a little something but most importantly giving them love and a blessing… but it wasn’t just the family that she touched as so she shares this gift of love with anyone that she met or that crossed her path, she was the true definition of love, happiness and faith!
