On November 07, 2017, Benancio “Benny” Palomo, Sr., a loving husband, father, grandfather, entrepreneur, and Army Veteran was called to be with our Heavenly Father. Born in Edinburg, Texas April 1, 1934 to Canuto and Benita Palomo, he grew up next door to his high school sweetheart, Luisa De La Fuente, the girl that would become his wife of 62 years; he resided in Houston, Texas for the majority of his life. Benny is survived by his wife Luisa, three sons, Benancio Jr. (Lisa), Michael, David (Nina), and two daughters Sylvia (Thomas) Herrin and Patricia Adams, and seven grandchildren, Alyssa, David, Trenton, Jeremy, Jared, Benancio III, and Karsyn.
He was an incredible self-employed, hard-working provider who lived and breathed produce from an early age when he and his father worked together. In later years he would start his own company El Tule Farms Produce, located at the historic Farmers Market on Airline, it was his pride a joy. The summertime quickly became a rite of passage for his grandsons; once old enough, they were allowed to work with him at the Market where he instilled the value of hard work and the dollar.
He thoroughly enjoyed life and loved sharing all his favorite memories, most of which included his years at Edinburg High School playing football, where he was affectionately known as “Mr. Zig Zag”, as well as numerous hunting trips with his family to Colorado and throughout the U.S., a sailfish fishing trip to Acapulco, (and anywhere with fish in water) he loved the great outdoors. Benny loved road trips, reasons to party, and traditions he and his family established, he enjoyed and appreciated the times and memories spent with family, friends and co-workers. He was a gravelly-voiced, honest and a straightforward man who wasn’t one to mince words. Always a giving man, he donated produce to local churches and participated in neighborhood fundraisers. He loved going to “the land” in East Bernard, Texas, and would make the trip almost every Sunday. He would light up and “shake a leg” on any dance floor. He was the forever “teenager” and truly a Great American Hero to his wife, children and grandchildren and a man for all seasons! He will forever be loved and missed.
The Family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of nurses and physicians at Memorial Herman Greater Heights Hospital in Houston for their kind and superb care.
A funeral mass will take place at 11:00 am on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 3600 Brinkman St, Houston, TX 77028. Ceremony with military honors to follow at 1:45 pm at Houston National Cemetery 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77038.
