Bernard Gray

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bernard Gray, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Bernard passed away peacefully on January 22, 2025, at the age of 78. He was born on September 5, 1946, in Mobile, Alabama, to Samuel and Minnie Gray.

A dedicated member of Cedar Street Baptist Church in Saraland, Alabama, Trevine Baptist Church, and True Light Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, Bernard was known for his strong faith and community involvement. He had a deep love for his family, faith, and his hobbies, which included watching and playing baseball, as well as being a devoted Alabama college football fan.

Bernard worked as a Public Works Mechanic II for the City of Houston, where he made lasting contributions to his community through his hard work and dedication. Bernard finally retired in January 1, 2002.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Gray Sr. and Minnie Gray; his brothers, Samuel Gray Jr. and Ray Gray; his sister, Faye McCants; and his brother-in-law, Frank Seals.

Bernard leaves to cherish his memory his daughters, Tiffany York (Marcus York), step-daughter Kristy Garrett (Gary Garrett), and Courtney Johnson (Kevin Johnson); his stepson, Thomas Simmons (Jena Simmons); his sisters, Sheryl Seals, Retha Regina Gray, and Bessie Johnson (Ray Johnson); his brothers, Bernett Gray (Mishelle Gray), Rev. Irving Gray (Janice Gray), and Gregory Boasten; and his grandchildren, A’lice York, Aaliyah York, Marcus York Jr., Kayla Garrett, Gary Garrett Jr., Bryan Osuji, Derrick Watts, Kason Garrett, and Kerri Johnson. He is also survived by his best friends, Glen, The Peavy brothers, and Geneva, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone who has shown support during this difficult time. Your prayers, phone calls, texts, and kind words have brought comfort to our hearts.

A celebration of Bernard’s life will be announced by the family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
