Bernice Wanda Hill Anderson was born on May 15, 1929 in Muskogee, OK to Cepheus and Lillian Hill. She matriculated in the Oklahoma Public School system where she received her education. At an early age, relocated to Oklahoma City, OK and United with the Greater Mt. Carmel Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor George Houston. She was instrumental in her church in many capacities knowing that her labor would not be in vain. She served tirelessly as an usher after organizing the first usher board for the church. In addition, she sang praises to God as a member of the choir, worked with the Pastor’s committee, cafeteria committee, Vacation Bible School and was a Sunday School teacher. Further, she was also quick to offer a hand of support to others as she worked as a member of the mission department. Wherever she could find a place to assist she was quick to offer support. She believed the Word of God which instructs that “Whatever you find to do with your hands, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.” Ecclesiastes 9:10.
After relocating to Oklahoma City, OK, Bernice met and fell in love with Fred G. Anderson. On July 25, 1951, they were united in holy matrimony. Bernice lovingly raised and cared for one daughter, Jacqueline; her nephew, Bennie Lawrence and her granddaughter, Donna. She taught them how to become productive citizens and instilled a love for God in each of their lives.
Bennie was so entranced with the word of God that he adhered to the call of God to minister at a young age. She was extremely proud of him and his ability to proclaim the gospel at the age of 19 years old. She was indeed proud of all of her children that God had placed in her care.
She taught them the importance of hard work and modeled this behavior by maintaining numerous jobs to provide a good life for her family. Included in her career was a position as an electrical technician at Honeywell and a cook at Tinkerfield Air Force Base.
Bernice didn’t believe that life was all work and no play so she filled her life with other hobbies that she loved. This included crocheting and making beautiful blankets and dresses which she lovingly bestowed on her loved ones. It was only love that could muster the hours it took to make some of the awesome designs she created - many of which are on the beds of her loved ones today. She was so gifted with homemaking that she made some of her own clothes, but her talents did not stop there, for she was an excellent cook and if you had the pleasure of one of her sweet potato pies - it was a delectable experience. Who could forget her infectious laugh as she enjoyed her game shows and watched some of her favorite wrestlers. It was simply a delight to sit and watch her loving life.
Bernice moved to Houston in her later years where she united with and served faithfully at the Jackson Memorial Church of God in Christ. She spent many hours worshiping and enjoying the fellowship at Jackson Memorial as well as spending time with her Houston family which consisted of Dorothy (her niece in love); great nieces; Christina and Tameka and great nephew, Bennie Lawrence, Jr. There were so many people that loved her and thank God that she graced their lives.
On Thursday, September 8, Bernice answered the call of God to return to His loving arms.
