Bert was born in Freeport, New York on July 19, 1933 to Gertrude and Bertram Murray Campbell. He lived on Long Island until he moved to Sarasota, Florida in 1963.
It was in Sarasota where he met the love of his life, Joan Marie Shalloe. Joan was working at the bank the day Bert walked in to open a new account. Later that day, he told his friend that he thought he met the girl he’d marry. Less than one year later, Bert and Joan were married at The Church of the Incarnation in Sarasota.
After a few years of living in New York and New Jersey, Bert and Joan settled in Houston in 1971 when he began his new career in the oil and gas industry. Houston became their beloved hometown where they raised their three daughters, Jeanne, Christine and Theresa.
Known for his big laugh and quick wit, Bert was always ready with a joke. In fact, he was just always “ready” — at least 5 minutes early — and you better be also! “If you’re on time, you’re late!”
The list of things he loved throughout his life is endless but included golf, backgammon, singing along with his girls to 8-tracks in his Cadillac, Tab, strawberry ice cream, a good bottle of wine, Italian food, mariachis and margaritas, finding the perfect table at a restaurant, reading The Wall Street Journal cover to cover, following the stock market, his beloved pets Maggie and Myla, and holding hands with Joan!
Bert fully enjoyed 38 years of retirement, and miraculously made it to 91 without a cell phone or an email address. He was happiest under the sun and on a beach. He loved the years he and Joan spent in Sarasota, and their wonderful beach vacations - especially to Mexico, and their many fun cruises.
He felt blessed by the many special friendships he enjoyed throughout his life, especially those made in the 16 years spent in Thornwood and their current residence at The Doliver.
Bert was an active member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joan, and son Bert Raddock, daughter Jeanne Poole and her husband, Robert, daughter Christine Hoffer and her husband Ty, and daughter Theresa Navis. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Michael and Jessica Raddock, Madeline, Hannah and Sophie Poole, Sadie and Olivia Hoffer, Brandon Navis and Dylan Fay, and three great grandchildren: Brooklyn and Bryson Navis, and Ava Raddock.
A funeral mass will be held at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, Houston, Texas, on Friday, August 2, 2024 at 10:30am.
A reception will immediately follow for family and friends at Houston Racquet Club, 10709 Memorial Drive.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Lone Star Rescue or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
