

Betty Jean Underwood Schleier, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2024, at the age of 98 in Harper, Texas. Born on August 7, 1926, in Fort Worth, Texas, Betty lived a full and meaningful life, moving from Fort Worth to Dallas before settling in Houston.
Betty attended Lanier Junior High and Lamar High School, and went on to graduate from Rice Institute in 1948. On May 14, 1949, she married the love of her life, Richard (Dick) Lee Schleier, marking the beginning of a loving and devoted partnership.
Betty's career began as a chemist, but her true passion emerged when she transitioned into teaching. As a long-time educator at Long Point Baptist School, she had the unique privilege of teaching both her daughter, Karen, in second grade, and her son, Randy, in fourth grade. Her dedication to education culminated in her role as principal at the school, where she left a lasting impact on many lives.
A devout Christian, Betty was an active member of South Main Baptist Church during her children's formative years and later attended Second Baptist Church until the passing of her husband. In her later years, she found a cherished community at Long Point Baptist Church, where she enjoyed the fellowship of friends, particularly during Wednesday meetings.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Lee Schleier, and her grandson, Richard Cato Schleier. She is lovingly survived by her children, Richard Lee Schleier, Jr., Karen Alison Benson, and Randall Martin Schleier; eight grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.
Betty Jean Underwood Schleier will be remembered for her unwavering love for her family, her commitment to education, and her deep faith. Her legacy of kindness and dedication lives on in the hearts of those she touched.
