Robert Owen (Bob) McGinnis of Houston, Texas, passed away on May 19, 2014, at the age of 86, following a brief illness. He was born June 15, 1927, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Charles E. McGinnis and Catherine E. Shelly. He grew up in Dallas, Texas, and attended Dallas Jesuit High School. Bob was a WWII veteran of the Marines and later graduated from Colorado College, where he met the love of his life, Patricia Ann Fulton. They married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colorado Springs on August 27, 1951, and moved shortly thereafter to Texas. He is predeceased by his mother and father, brothers Bill and Jerry, sister Jean, treasured son Mike, son-in-law James, and beloved wife Pat (“Mimi”). Bob was a life-long servant of the Catholic Church, and his abiding faith inspired all who knew him.
Bob enjoyed a long career as a geologist, working for the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company. Pat and he moved around Texas, living in Kingsville, Corpus Christi, Midland, Dallas, and finally Houston. They looked at each move as an adventure and made lasting friendships in each location. Their marriage and their family were always the center of their lives, and wherever they lived, they created a warm and lively home for their nine children and eventually for their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bob is survived by his children and their families: John McGinnis and wife Becky (Kara and Kathryn); Bill McGinnis and wife Lori (Will and Mike); Cathy McGinnis Hicks and husband Rusty (Sara, Jena and husband Kyle Cordell and son Jake, and Jessi); Jim McGinnis and wife Terri (Ryan); Joe McGinnis and wife Michelle (Megan and husband Juston Wilson and son Rodeo; Kelly, Kevin, and David); Beth McGinnis Young (Jason and his wife Jovana and children Jordan, Jaylynn, Jaeden; Russell and wife Katie, Robert and fiancé Stephanie, Sean, and Marshall); Tom McGinnis and wife Stephanie (Kendall and Matt); and Shelley McGinnis and her partner Debbie Newman.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, June 13, 2014, at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, 11720 Joan of Arc Drive, with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a contribution be made to St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church or Marbridge Foundation in Austin, Texas.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Memorial Hermann Hospital who treated Dad with respect and tenderness. We are forever grateful.
