Carol was born in Alameda, California, the first child of Elizabeth and Carol Aronovici. Born into an artistic family, Carol received a Master of Fine Arts degree from University of California Los Angeles. While teaching overseas, Carol met her husband Duane Johnson in Karlsruhe, Germany while they were performing in Agatha Christie’s "Ten Little Indians". They were married for 60 years before Duane passed away in 2019.
Carol and Duane lived in Michigan, Japan, Illinois, and Colorado before moving to San Antonio in 1973. The time that they spent together in Japan truly changed Carol’s life. She loved the Japanese people and culture and shared her passion with those around her. In San Antonio, she taught Japanese dance and formed the Matsura Dance Group. They performed at Texas Folklife Festival for many years, donning full kimono in the blazing Texas heat. She loved Origami, the Japanese art of folding paper, and taught at festivals and as a volunteer in the schools.
Carol was an active member of the Sierra Club, Japan America Society, and Friendship Force. She served as an ambassador at the San Antonio Airport, providing friendly assistance to travelers. She and Duane volunteered as ushers at the Majestic and Tobin Theaters.
Carol is survived by her brother, John Aronovici; her daughter, Michele Navratil (Philip); and her grandson Robert Navratil.
