

On Monday, March 4, 2024, Mrs. Chansook “Anna” Ma-Kim at age 91 passed away to join Jesus and her loving husband of 63 years. She will be laid to rest alongside her husband, Hyung Jin “Lorenzo” Kim, who passed away only 6 months ago in September 2023.
She was born in Bon-Dong, Youngdeungpo-Gu, Seoul, Korea on May 15, 1932, to the family of Mr. Sangmoon Ma (father), Mrs. Sookyung Kang (mother), as the fourth daughter of 10 children (with 3 older sisters, 5 younger sisters, and a younger brother). She attended Sookmyung Girls High School and graduated from Seoul National University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering. While working as a Teacher at Youndeungpo Girls High School, she met her husband. In 1960, she married her loving husband in a Catholic wedding at Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul. Eventually, together the couple founded Ma Chan Sook Cooking School at Kwanghwamun Square in Seoul. She became a famous food celebrity on TV cooking shows, published many popular cookbooks, and taught nutrition and homemaking at women’s colleges. She was a natural teacher, funny, intelligent, and the audiences loved her. Together with her sisters, her Team regularly catered to the Blue House for the Presidents and global dignitaries.
The couple worked, played, and traveled together everywhere they went. In 1973, the family moved to Houston, Texas, where they operated “Kar-Kwik” convenience store then a pizza restaurant “Italian Beef House” near University of Houston. She was a devout Catholic and taught about Love of God to her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered for her kindness, always being considerate towards others, and her strong will that resulted in highly successful accomplishments throughout her life. She loved to play tennis and anything to do with the latest high-tech gadgets. She was a good role model, a good mother, and a good wife, pleasing to God.
She leaves behind her son (John Inkyu Kim and his wife Heeja Kim; grandson John Jinsoo Kim and his wife Jamie Hannah Kim; granddaughter Jane Jinni Kim) and her daughter (Dr. Joanne Yangsun Kim-Yi and her husband Marcus Yi; granddaughters Sarah Yi and Hannah Yi). She is survived by her sisters – Chanboon Ma (95), Chanhee Ma (90), Changeum Ma (87), Hyunsook Ma (82), and Kyungsook Ma (75) – and their families, who are praying for her from Korea.
Visitation will be held Thursday, March 21, 2024, from 6PM to 8PM with Houston Hanbit Church Prayer scheduled at 7PM and Rosary scheduled at 8PM at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77079. A funeral mass will occur Friday, March 22, 2024, at 10AM at St. Andrew Kim Catholic Church, 1706 Bingle Rd, Houston, TX 77055. A committal will occur Friday, March 22, 2024, at 11:30AM at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77079.
