

Charlie went to Brookhaven High School and attended Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. During his freshman year he left for the Army and then Officer Training School. When World War II ended, he returned to Georgia Tech where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order and Chi Epsilon (engineering honor society). He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
After graduation Charlie joined Arkansas Louisiana Gas, Corp. and then Texas Gas Transmission, Corp. in Shreveport, Louisiana. He subsequently met Betty Williams in New Orleans. They married on the 18th of September 1954, and lived in Shreveport until 1956 when they moved to Houston, Texas. He worked for Texas Gas Transmission for 30 years where he became President in 1977 and later CEO under CSX Corp. Upon retiring from Texas Gas he started Commet Resources and also Gas Transmission, Ltd.
Charlie also served as a member of the Board of Directors for numerous companies including Conservatek Industries Inc., Entex, Chem First Corp., Getcheld Gold Corp., Central Lumber Mineral Company, Tanglewood Bank and Brookhaven Bank and Trust. He was President of the Houston Gas Association and board member of the American Gas Association and Southern Gas Association.
Charlie was a devout Christian and an active member of St. Philip Presbyterian Church. He was an Elder for many years and also served on the finance committee. He was a Scout Master and led a local Houston troop to Philmont in New Mexico. Charlie was a proud alumnus of Georgia Tech and served on the President’s Advisory Board. He also served on the Board of Trustees for the Retina Research Foundation and Kentucky Weslyan College.
Charlie was a member of Houston Country Club where he enjoyed many rounds of golf and lunches with friends. He also loved to bird hunt with his friends, sons, son-in-laws and grandsons. Everyone who knew Charlie enjoyed his sharp wit and “precious” personality.
Charlie’s love for his wife, children and grandchildren was foremost in his life. He is survived by Betty, his loving wife of 56 years; his daughters, Laura McDaniel and her husband Mike, and Dana M. Whiteford; his sons, Sam Moreton and his wife Ellen, Elliott Moreton and his wife Laura, and Paul Moreton and his wife Julie; his grandchildren, Ben and Elizabeth Driggs, Ted and Amy Whiteford, Mallory and Charles Moreton, Andrew Moreton, Laney and Luke Moreton, Meagan and Kristin McDaniel and Riley and Kyle Culver.
The family extends their gratitude to the staff at Houston Hospice for the outstanding care given to Charlie.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening on Tuesday, the 22nd of February, at the home of Mike and Laura McDaniel.
The memorial service is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 23rd of February, at Saint Philip’s Presbyterian Church, 4807 San Felipe Road in Houston, where Dr. William Poe is to officiate.
Prior to the service, the family will have gathered at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston for a private interment.
