We celebrate the life of Collis Walter Whitfield and his exuberant and purpose-filled existence. Collis was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois on November 7, 1967 to Gladys Bridges Taylor and Walter Whitfield. He spent his early years in East Chicago Heights and attended Saint Mary’s Catholic School and Cottage Grove Elementary. The family moved to Texas in 1981 and he attended Nolan Middle School and was a graduate of Ellison High School. At age 18, Collis commenced into manhood and matriculated at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) where he was a running back on the football team.
Collis was known for his lively and friendly personality which occasionally revealed a hint of mischievousness and stubbornness. Even as a child, he was known as the class clown, but was always gracious and respectful. Collis had the gift of gab and a passion for music, motorcycles, football, and basketball. One of his favorite pastimes as a young boy was watching the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers while eating popcorn with his mother.
While attending PVAMU, Collis was hugely popular and affectionately known on campus as “Biff.” He became a member of the Crescendo Fraternity, although he often struggled with carrying a tune. As a testament to his outstanding work ethic, Collis had 31 years of senior and executive level management experience. He began shift work at a local Sonic Restaurant as a student and was swiftly promoted to Manager. His sharp analytical, managerial, and leadership skills led to senior roles at Bennigan’s, Boston Market, Arby’s, and CiCi’s Pizza restaurant corporations.
It was at PVAMU that Collis would meet his soulmate, Angela Dever. In August of 1994, his best friend Derick Ward reconnected Angela and Collis. She swept him off his feet so swiftly, that within three months he asked for her hand in marriage. They became husband and wife on March 11, 1995 and their union was marked by a deep unconditional love. They had three beautifully gifted children: Aspen Elaine, Ariana Elise, and Collis Wayman. Their children inherited both Collis’ and Angela’s intellect and athleticism and they would spend most of their days traveling together to athletic and academic activities in support of each other.
Collis and Angela shared an unrelenting faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Their passion for seeking and knowing Him was evident to all. In 1995 they became members of Brookhollow Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. After relocating to Dallas, Texas in 1997 their faith journey continued at the Potters House Church. This marked the beginning of many years of spiritual transformation and healing. Together, Collis and Angela served in Children’s Church, Homeless, Evangelism, and Senior ministries. They also served at Above and Beyond Fellowship as Marriage Group Leaders and on the Intercessory Prayer Team.
Collis heartily embraced life and lived it to the fullest. He was an amazing entertainer, storyteller and comic, and enjoyed spending quality time with his friends and loved ones. There was never a dull moment with Collis around and he was always the life of the party. Not only was he a brilliant advisor, an engaged mentor and confidant, but he was also a devoted friend at all times. Above all, he adored his family and his provisions for them were thoughtful, intentional, and limitless.
Collis was preceded in death by his father, Walter Whitfield, maternal grandparents- Robert and Frankie Bridges, paternal grandparents- Tessie and W.C. Whitfield, and niece- Tamicia Whitfield. He leaves to cherish innumerable memories- his loving Wife Angela of 24 years, Daughters- Aspen Elaine, Ariana Elise, Kamar Nicole, and Son- Collis Wayman, Mother- Gladys Bridges, Siblings- Terrell Whitfield, Tammy Whitfield-Hickman (Terrill), Gwendolyn Whitfield, and Edmond Duane (Gwanda), and a host of cherished aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Collis’ legacy will be eternally remembered because of the perpetual light and life that beamed from his radiant spirit. In our hearts we shall carry the magnificent and amusing memories of a remarkable human being who lived to bring joy to the lives of others. In Collis’ very own words, “I love you more!”
To honor Mr. Whitfield's colorful personality, the family request that guests refrain from wearing dark colors.
