Conrad Santiano Mananquil was born in the Philippines on the 8th of October 1938. He passed away on Wednesday, the 17th of April 2013 at North Cypress Medical Center in Cypress, Texas at 74 years of age. He is survived by his wife, Frances Puno Mananquil; his older daughter, Joanne Mananquil Smith and husband Thomas (TJ) Smith; his youngest daughter, Gina Mananquil Jaeschke and husband Leslie (Buddy) Jaeschke; his grandchildren, Olivia Renee Jaeschke (4) and Jackson Conrad Jaeschke(23 mos).
Conrad married Frances Pineda Puno in the Philippines in December 1973. The happy couple moved to New York, NY shortly thereafter. They welcomed two daughters to their lives while living in The Big Apple. The young family moved to Houston, Texas during the oil boom in 1980. Conrad quickly found work in road construction - which is never-ending in “H-Town”. He helped build many of the highways in and around the Bayou City that Houstonians use every day. He was most proud of his work on the Hartman Bridge, which is not only a marvel of engineering, but also a beautiful structure that carries commuters from La Port to Baytown.
Conrad retired from the construction industry following a major heart attack in 2004. After his recovery, Conrad and Frances moved to a beautiful new home in Cypress and Conrad decided to go back to work as a greeter at the local Walmart. This was the perfect job for a man who loved to talk and meet new people. He blessed Walmart shoppers with his happy smile and hearty laugh for five years. In full retirement, Conrad traveled with his wife and visited with his grandchildren, who live in Hawaii.
Conrad Mananquil never met a stranger. He had the unique ability to make people feel instantly at ease and as if they were part of his family. He told fantastical stories, which he punctuated with his roaring laugh. He was a man who - as Frank Sinatra would say - did it his way. We know he is singing Sinatra with the angels. He will truly be missed by his family and by all those he touched with his ever-present smile and warmth.
Funeral services for Conrad will be held Friday, April 26, 2013 at 10:30am at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Reception to follow.
