David Andersen Carl

David was born in Buffalo, New York, to Frederick George Grover Carl and Lillian Ragnhild Carl in 1936. He was the youngest of four children. His father died when he was young and later his mother remarried and moved to California. David attended Hollywood High School in Los Angeles and graduated from Mount Hermon preparatory school in Massachusetts, where his father, stepfather, and a brother all had also attended. He earned a scholarship to Cornell University where he graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. Sports were always a passion of David’s, growing up with two older brothers, Fred and Dick, who were active in competitive sports. He learned to compete early, and while at Cornell, he became a star football player. He was an active member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and was a loyal alumnus throughout his life.

David was a devoted and loving husband, father, and uncle, as well as an outgoing, gregarious soul who became a friend to all he met. He met his wife, Diana, of 56 years in San Francisco. At that time, Tony Bennett’s song, I Left My Heart in San Francisco, was very popular and thereafter became a favorite of David’s and Diana’s. They were married in Dallas in 1966 and moved to Miami where David was in business with his brother, Dick Carl. Diana and David decided to move back to Texas, where he wanted to get involved with the thriving construction industry. They made the move to Houston in 1968 where they built their careers, raised their family, and pursued their many interests. David became a real estate developer and builder in Houston and Little Rock, AR. He thoroughly enjoyed the construction industry and was always passionate about developing his next “deal.” Among David’s many interests and passions, he always loved the ocean, especially spending time scuba diving and at the beach. Many weekends and summers were spent at the Islander East Condominiums in Galveston where the family had many friends and was often found at the pool.

David was preceded in death by his son, David Andersen Carl II, his parents, and his three siblings, Fred Carl of Superior, MT; Dick Carl of Miami, FL; and Lorrayne Carl Long of San Jose, CA.

David is survived by his wife, Diana Foster Carl; his daughter Dana Lynne Carl, his son David Foster Carl and fiancé, Angela Sugg, and his sister-in-law, Jan Foster McCoy. He had many beloved nieces and nephews.

A private family celebration of life is planned at a later date.
