Uncle Chen is always so kind and hospitable to my family when we visit TX or see him on vacation.  I am especially touched by how he interacts with his grandchildren and the closeness they share.  It is truly a lovely legacy of love and respect for family that he leaves for them.  My heartfelt condolences to the family.

David was a good friend and teacher.  I appreciated his help offered with much generosity.  I admired his integrity, his humor, and his unfailing golf skills.  I will always remember his laser-like approach shots, his long putts, and many chip-ins.  I valued him as a friend and will always remember his presence.

I can still picture your mischievous grin whenever I close my eyes.

We've met only a few dozen times over the past couple of years, but I felt we knew each other so well that we could communicate without a word through a twinkle of your eyes, or that impish smile.  You have not changed a bit through these years, and it is so unreal that you are gone already. It is even harder to accept that you left without saying goodbye.  Don't tease me! I can hear you chuckling from way up high. 

Zenas wrote about you giving him many “real-life lessons” while he was in Texas.  I believe I was fortunate to be one of those with whom you shared your life's wisdom.  As an independent thinker and self taught man, you became an expert handyman and hotel manager through keen observations and by constant challenging the status quo.  Such achievement cannot be appreciated unless one has been through the struggle of a middle-aged immigrant to a foreign country; someone with limited language skills who is trying anything and everything to set down roots so he can raise his family in a brave new world.  Uncle, you are truly one of those precious few for whom formal education would have contributed little to your many successes.

When your long journey began to reveal the light at the end of the tunnel, you shifted your focus to maintaining a quiet and dignified life, while striving to avoid becoming a burden to your loved ones.  This is yet another valuable lesson I learned from you.  Everyone recognized and appreciated your generosity and readily helping hands, and you gave so abundantly and freely.  I feel so privileged to have gotten so much from you, all of your priceless hard-earned lessons of life.  We miss you so much.

That is what I remember the most about my uncle David.  I recall seeing that smile many times from a distance until I get close enough for him to tell me the “story of the day”.  When I was a teenager living in San Antonio, that daily story could range from an irresponsible contractor he had hired for a repair at the motel to something major in the news.  It took me many years to figure out that while he was passionate about his business and well informed about the key events, telling me what he experienced or learned that day was his way of saying “hi” to me.  It is difficult for most adults to speak to a teenager but he certainly knew how to make me feel good about being a part of his world.  

He was also an accidental entrepreneur who worked to live.  I still remember him counting cars at the rival motels and mastering all the mundane tasks involved with operating a motel - he was a quick learner and a smart manager who would have succeeded in any business profession of his choosing.  While his relationship-driven nature certainly helped him overcame the language and cultural challenges facing most immigrant business owners, his most important relationships were those with families and friends.  He pursued the hospitality business to support his family and business success was never a primary goal.  In fact, he is so humble that he would probably tell you his business success was merely accidental.

What is not accidental is his unwavering pursuit of happiness through work/life balance and supporting others.  He had often gone out of his way to help friends and family members, including my family during our first few years in Texas.  For me, the amazing part of it all is that I do not ever recall him discussing much of it, not even his own children's success to which he clearly contributed.  Perhaps that clear vision of what is important in life is so deeply ingrained that the only expression we see is his smile.

For that, and all the great values he exemplifies, I will miss him tremendously.  Until we meet again, in memory of what Uncle David has accomplished, there is one thing I plan on doing more often.

I can never thank you enough for taking me under your wing when I came to visit a few years ago.  I had never been on any major trips on my own, and it was such a relief that I had a friendly face to pick me up from the airport.  You also gave me my "first car" - I drove your SUV for the summer and I was so scared that I was going to scratch it.  You taught me so much during our breakfast lectures and helped me grow; even though we spent such a short time together in person, you will always be with me.

Don't forget you owe me a round of golf, you promised you'd teach me how to play too!

As well said in the obituary, Master Chen was one of the most respectable persons in our group of golfers. He was a champion with good characters of focus, confidence, abstract thinking, emotional stability and dominance. We will miss his generosity and guidance.

Dear David,

I am going to miss you a lot, miss your humor, miss your smile, miss your wise, miss your candor,  and most of all, just miss you as a simple and a decent person.  Last week, I was so looking forward to you showing up at golf course, and you did, and we teed off together, while we were walking hole by hole, we chatted everything as we always do, I was happy to learn from you that your previous weeks check-up at Corpus Christi were all okay, but at 9th hole, you appeared tired and showed wariness, then you stop and went home while we went on to the back 9.   How could I ever knew that was last time we played together.      I am so saddened not able to get your swing tips on the range, to bet a few dollars on the course and to chat the politic on the phone with you any more,  but knowing you, guessing you with your normal smile and already fond a great golf course up in heaven and started to practicing your putting”.

Dear Uncle,

More than you know, you have taught me important lessons in life that I still remember and practice to this day. During those impressionable years when I first came to the States as a young teenager and staying with you and Auntie, I learned from you the value of hard work, discipline, integrity, and respect. You were a much-needed role model to me and your support and encouragement in those early years helped me build a strong foundation for my future successes and for that I am forever grateful.

I truly appreciated your generosity, kindness, and everything that you have done for me and my family. I regret not having spent more time to visit with you after I left Texas and I will always have fond memories of you.

I am very sorry for your loss.  I was not fortunate enough to get to know Uncle David, but only met him and heard of his excellent and generous character through Marcus, but I will not forget his gracious manner and how his help and hard work impacted so many people's lives for the better.

Among my earliest memories as a child were times spent with you when my mom and I first visited you, aunt, Marian, and Jackson in San Antonio.  I was just a toddler then and was far too young to have a concept of much, but to this day I still remember distinctly the many places we went, the things we did, and the moments I spent alone with you.  In particular, I remember how I used to accompany you while you worked in that dark office in the motel, usually going through the books.  I would help you sort through the coins from the soda machine, count them for you, and then put them into the coin wrapper.  You would then buy me a can of soda and let me drink to my heart's content.  Reminiscing this always brings a smile.
 
Looking back now, I realize the profound influence you have had on me.  Unbeknownst to me then, you served as a much-needed male role model during my formative years.  From you, I learned the importance of hard work, discipline, perseverance, generosity, humility, and family.  We never had a talk about these things, but then again it was not needed.  You embodied those virtues and lived by them.  I only had to observe.  I admire you deeply and can only hope to be able to live as you have.

I cannot emphasize enough the significance of all that you have done for us over the years.  I regret that I was too young then to fully comprehend the enormity of your generosity and was far too shy to express my gratitude.  Simply put, you helped make everything that came after possible.  Thank you.

And for that toddler in me, thanks for the memories.  I will miss you sorely.

We're going to miss you dearly.  Thank you being a generous uncle who took us in when we first immigrated to the US.  We were probably such mischievous rascals who got on your nerves sometimes.  Yet, you were always so gracious and took care of us.  Didn't get to see you much once we moved to CA.  But, we sure always enjoyed your visits here.  You're fun to talk to, and you seem to have an unlimited supply of funny life stories to tell.   When I think of you, I see a face that is smiling so big that even your eyes smile.  Ahh...we are going to miss you.  We will remember you in our hearts.  Thank you for leaving me so many fond memories of you.  Thank you for paving the way for our family to be here.  We would not be where we are today without you.  You mean a lot to us all.
