A lifetime resident of the Houston area, David grew up in and around the Heights and graduated from St. Pius High School. The bulk of his career was spent in the energy industry, working for United Gas, Spinoza, and Brown & Root where he became a leader in the field of Materials Management. When that season of his life came to a close, he ventured out to own and operate a sign business. In his final fifteen years of life, David’s energies were directed toward supporting his wife’s calling as a pastor, ancestry research, loving God and encouraging others to boldly live out their faith.
Whatever he did, David approached life fully and courageously, never letting an obstacle get in his way.
Everywhere David went, you immediately knew when he walked into the room. Everybody kept an eye on David Kirby because you never quite knew what he would say or do next -- anticipation would sometimes be rewarded with a cringe, sometimes a belly laugh, and sometimes a phrase that would echo with the simple spiritual reverberation you were in need of hearing.
David leaves many people behind in his passing, but nobody who knew David will ever leave behind his memory. He will live with us in our daily lives just as he will continue on, alive in Christ, absent from the body, but present with the Lord. He will be greatly missed and the David-shaped void in all who knew him will not soon be filled. His volume, earnestness, and directness deposited a legacy that will force all of us to grow up just a little bit more so we can endure his absence.
David is survived by his cherished bride, Paula Lynn Kirby. He will be greatly missed by his children, Monica Renea O’Brien, Lisa Kay Raines, David Todd Kirby, Julie Paige Kirby, and Beth Anne Wilson — their spouses, Randy, Darren, Michael, Suzanne, and Lee will always share a common bond of meeting David for the first time.
All of David’s grandchildren, Tyler, Zeb, Hannah, Riley, Stone, Jonah, Abbey, Liam, Nancy, Rowan, and Reid; and his great grandson, Asher, will carry around the countless stories of the absurd and wonderful things he brought into all their lives. Their grandfather fought the failing of his body until the very end, that he might know them a little longer and a little better.
Go, beloved, in the peace of Christ, knowing that David Charles Kirby goes before you and is surely anticipating the reunion with loved ones that accompanies Christian resurrection.
A Celebration Of Life for David will be held Friday, August 30, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Kingwood United Methodist Church, 1799 Woodland Hills Dr., Kingwood, TX 77339.
