

Dell Verna Avery was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on May 3, 1952 to the late John Henry Horton Sr. and Ruth D. Fuller Horton. She attended public school in Houston, Texas (Wheatley High School) and graduated college at Prairie View A&M University. She would later earn a Master's Degree at Texas Woman's University in Houston, Texas. Dell was employed by Haliburton Brown and Root for over 25 years as an information resource director. She accepted the position as the information resourcer for Sanford Brown Institute for over ten years until she was called to Texas Southern University (librarian). Dell continued her career with the Texas Heart Institute until she entered into Eternal Rest.
Dell accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Grace Church Humble under the leadership of Pastors Scott and Brett Jones. During this time she served as a prayer team member, a volunteer in the front office and Oasis member. Dell often sang for her Oasis church members. She lead songs of praise as a faithful volunteer with Word of Faith Ministries. Dell led praise and worship in prison ministry and led hundreds to Christ.
Dell married the love of her life the late Donald E. Avery in Houston, Texas. This union treasured for over twenty five years; they shared countless memories and remained married until his transition into Heaven. Dell was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She loved her family dearly as being the first coordinator of the Wade Whorton Family Reunions, the Fuller Fish Fry's and host of other family events. She loved her son Donavan Avery; she was a proud mother of one child. She left Donavan a legacy for the remainder of his life on earth. She was a caring and loving grandmother better known as "Nanna". Dell was always excited to spend time with her grands and make priceless memories. She loved Jesus with her whole heart.
Dell is preceded in death by her parents, John and Ruth Horton, Donald E. Avery, her husband.
She leaves to cherish her memory, faithful son, Donavan K. Avery (Chartra Avery); granddaughter, Karis Dyanna Avery; Kennedy Cole Roberts, grandson; Shirley Horton Molina (John Molina), sister; Ronnie Horton (Gail Horton), brother; John H. Horton Jr., brother. Carolyn McCraw (late Frank McCraw), sister in-law; Raye Avery, brother in-law; Faye Carter, sister in-law. Special Nieces Krisna Young, Connie Washington (Jermaine Washington), Jaylen Horton, Jamia Horton and Jada Horton. Nephews, Christopher Harvey (Anna Harvey), Ronnie Horton Jr. (Kendra Horton). A host of cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.
