 D -Daddy to Carlen, Paul & myself. Weekends were ours as we were taken on country trips, to the beach or treated at the restaurant with our favourite burger and sizzling pepsi drink. He was devoted to his job and he would work for more than eight hours in the day without fussing about it. He was determined to carry out any decisions he made on any issue. It was not easy to convinced him to change his mind about a decision he made. 
E- An excellent chef who ensured the Jamaican herbs and spices were included in the preparation of his meals. He prepared a good chicken meal and he didn’t even eat chicken. Why? Only because he saw a chicken eating a roach.  
 R-Responsible:  He carried out his financial responsibility as father until we were able to manage on our own as adults. Even when I visited as an adult, I was sure to get my pocket money from him. He saw it as his responsibility to ensure we had the biggest Yummy Easter bun and the biggest ham for the Christmas season as children.
Resilient. When he went through the storms of life, he would bounced back stronger than before.  This is evident in his life as a businessman man who changed careers on more than one occasion. He lost some money & friends on the way but he bounced back and continued on his career path.
Independent: He loved his independence. Even in ill health, he wanted to do things on his own. He would cut up his vegetables and go to the grocery store all by himself.  Even though he had a problem with his vision he still wanted to drive himself around.
Charming/ Caring. He charmed the ladies with his beautiful smile, and his wonderful personality. He was also a classy dresser, always neatly attired and sporting nice smelling colognes which I would wear. 
K for Kind. He was very kind and assisted those he could. One day  Carlen went to pick him up to take him to the doctor, while she was fuming at how long he took to come to the car, she was surprised when he took a bowl of fruits for her.  

Reflecting on the life of Derrick Wilson 

 

A father is the noblest title a man can be given. It is more than a biological role and he was a father to me and my siblings. 

 In Jamaica as a mark of respect, older siblings were given the title Bro or sister attached to their first names, and so daddy being the eldest, rightfully earned the title Bro Derrick. Although his co-workers, friends, & close associates called him Derrick or Mr. Wilson, Carlen & Paul and I, called him Daddy and we will always refer to him as Daddy. He was more than a biological role in our lives. 

Derrick Mervin Wilson, was born in Westmoreland, Jamaica to Doris Reid a housewife and Beresford Wilson, a chef on June 21, 1946. In his lifetime he worked as a tour operator driving the popular big yellow cab, and he was also a restaurant owner in Jamaica.  

In search of a better opportunity, he migrated to the USA and had the opportunity of owning his own trucking business. Later he was given the chance to become a car Sales consultant. 

Daddy had the privilege of walking down the aisle more than once with some beautiful women, in comparison to other men who were only able to dream about it. He was blessed with both children & grandchildren.   

The little things he did made him unique, and there are some characteristics Daddy displayed in his life that I will share with you using the letters in his first name Derrick.  He was:

A tribute to or wonderful brother.


There are so many precious memories that we will forever hold dear and cherish forever.

It was always a joy when as kids to see “ bro Derrick’s” car coming around the corner. “Bro Derrick come” we would all shout, it was as if Christmas had come early because we all would get “a lil pocket money”.


He had a laugh that was like no other, you knew he was there before you even saw him just by hearing his laughter. His laughter would have us all laughing even when we never got the joke.



He was a hard working and independent man. He loved to cook which led him to start his own restaurant As kids it was a great feeling visiting out “big brother’s” restaurant as many of us would go there for lunch. We were proud to have him as our brother.


God saw that you were tired and and the only solution was to put his arms around you and whispered come home to me my child.

With tearful eyes we had to accept that you had passed away

Your golden heart stopped beating and your hard working hands at rest.

God broke our hearts to prove that he only takes the best

Our love for you will ever fade Derrick even though you’re gone
For as long as there’s a memory you’ll always be in our hearts our

Sleep on and rest well brother we will miss you greatly.


You can always tell where a beautiful soul has been by the tears and smiles left behind. Condolences to the family for the loss of a very special person. My prayers are with you during this time of grief.

Even though my grandpa is not here with me at this moment,  and we always had distance in travel. There was always your  infectious smile and laugh that makes my heart smile. I have treasured memories that I will keep forever. 


Its been wonderful knowing you from being a good neighbor for almost 15years. This migrate to a wonderful parental role that you have made to me and my children that always calls you PAPPY. We still remember those glorious  jokes and fatherly advise that you always rendered to me and my family. Sometimes we will together walk round the complex talking about life experience.
We will surely mis you Pappy D.
Continue to rest in the bossom of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Grandpa.
We will keep the memories  of you all our lives  and we were lucky  to have a grandpa like you.
Happy we were able to be with you two years ago (2019) and 
We will miss your smile.

Our hearts still ache with sadness and many tears still flow. What it meant to loose you,  so suddenly, no one will ever know.
We hold you close within our hearts and there you will remain.  To walk with us in our lives until we meet again.

Derrick. I can no longer see you or touch you. But you will always be in my heart and I will miss you. Sleep well.

Derrick, 
 I am so sorry you had to leave without saying goodbye. You have been my friend and confidante for many years,  up to your untimely death.  I will always remember the times we shared together,  happily creating tasty  meals for both of our families, with the rich Jamaican flavors.  I know without a doubt that you are now in a better place, free of all health issues. Bye for now until we meet again.

May God grant your children strength, and comfort them at this time of loss. let them always remember how you enjoyed life to the fullest.

This saddens me. Mr. Wilson was always such a bright, full of life person! His laugh was contagious! He was kind. 
I remember him sitting at a bbq with my family at my sisters house backyard patio. Good times and great memory! 
This world was blessed to know him and now he shares his wonderful personality with the heavens and God. God speed and know that your memory lives on! Thank you for adding joy to our lives. 🙏
