Doris Loveern Yarbrough peacefully passed away on August 10, 2025. She was born in the piney woods of East Texas. She always went by her middle name, Loveern. She grew up in rural Shelby County and moved to Houston for work. She worked in banking for many years. Her friend set her up on a blind date with a fellow named Joe and they were married just shy of 60 years. She was almost 40 when she had their only child. They lived in the Spring Branch area for over 50 years.
After having their child, she stayed home to be a full-time mother and homemaker. She was always very organized and particular about things. Everyday breakfast and dinner were served at a set time and she would prepare a brown bag lunch for Joe to take to work. Often a fried egg sandwich or left over pork chop. Her pecan pie, fudge and potato salad were always a big hit.
She was affectionately called MeeMaw by her two grand-daughters, and she kept them when her daughter worked part time for a while. The older one loved her deviled eggs and would only eat MeeMaw’s eggs and the youngest inherited her green thumb and her 30 year old pothos ivy.
She enjoyed playing Rook with her Georgia family…for hours at a time. You could always hear both laughter and frustration during gametime. She also enjoyed taking trips to the casino with friends and her sisters. She loved playing the slots but never said how much she took or brought home. She went shopping almost every week and had a love for red tops. She also enjoyed watching the Houston Rockets and would hoot and holler and have a lot to say about the players.
She had several life long friends and a close relationship with her two sisters. She was in the middle of the three. She was a very dedicated daughter to her parents who lived in East Texas. She often traveled to East Texas to help her mother with grocery shopping and errands. She did this for twenty years.
She cared deeply for her family, was dedicated and a great support. We miss you momma, Meemaw, Loveern, but we know you’re in heaven eating all the desserts your heart desires, playing Rook with loved ones and watching over us.
She is survived by her daughter Cathy Darrow (spouse Keith), grand-daughters Paige and Allison and sisters Edna Carter (spouse John) and Janelle Daniels (spouse Tom), sister-in laws Judy Callan (spouse Earl), Lillian Green, and Pauline Yarbrough as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her husband Joe Yarbrough and her parents Lizzie and Robert Cordray.
A visitation will be held at American Heritage Funeral Home, located at 10710 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038, on August 26, 2025, from 12:30 pm to 1:45 pm.
The committal service will follow at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77038, on August 26, 2025, from 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm.
