In 1953 Dan saw Dorothy Busby at the American Legion Hall in Flatonia, TX at a dance. It was love at first sight. He knew that was the woman he was going to marry. She was engaged to another man and worked for the City Café in Flatonia, TX. Dan decided he was going to hang out there. He started giving Dorothy rides home from work. Dorothy returned her engagement ring to the other guy. Things heated up. Before you knew it they were engaged to be married.
They were married on September 5, 1954. Their life started. What a great life they have had for 64 years, almost 65 years, come this September. A life filled with a lot of love, heartache and determination to get through it all. On July 13, 1956 Randy Gast was born. On September 24, 1958 Darrell Gast was born. On May 29, 1960 Michael Gast was born. She loved being a homemaker and mother. One of the things she loved to do was gardening. She always had a beautiful garden, canned vegetables and fruit, etc. She loved to cook. Dan and Dorothy were both busy with the kid's. Randy was special needs. Darrell was busy with school and athletics activities after school. Michael got sick and was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma at the age of 6. He was involved in athletic sports also. His favorite was baseball. He fought a hard fight to win the battle regarding the disease. But on April 16, 1969 Michael lost his battle. With hard work and lots of love the whole family made it through the loss.
Dorothy had several hobbies. She enjoyed Coushatta Casino and the quarter slot machines. The deer lease in Sonora, TX where the family hunted. She enjoyed cooking and feeding everyone and traveling to visit family and friends.
Dorothy was a fighter and ran a good race. Just like her son. She had been ill for about a year and a half. She was on Hospice for the last 6 weeks of her life. Dan, Darrell and Randy took care of her at home. Monday, July 1, 2019, she was sleeping when she took her last breath. Jesus called and Dorothy answered.
