Dorothy Francis Noack George passed away on December 26, 2012 at age 90. A native Houstonian, Dorothy lived in Houston all of her life except for several years spent in California in the early 1960’s and New Orleans and later Baton Rouge. Dorothy was the daughter of Virginia Cox Noack and Leonard Frank Noack both of Houston, Texas. She grew up in the Houston Heights and Southside Place with her brother, Buster, and sister, Ann. She attended San Jacinto High School and Reagan High School where she graduated in 1940. In 1942, Dorothy married Archer Lloyd George in Oklahoma City where Archer was stationed with the Navy at Tinker Field. Dorothy and Archer were married for 33 years until Archer’s death in September of 1975.
Dorothy went to secretarial school in Houston and became an accomplished statistical typist working for Dow Chemical and later in the office of the renowned oil prospector, Glenn McCarthy – King of the Wildcatters. After her daughter, Janice, was born she became a full-time mom to Janice and later her son, David. Following Archer’s death, she worked for Aero Service Corporation and Briargrove Pharmacy. She ran the gift shop at The Vosswood Nursing Center on behalf of the pharmacy and also worked at the pharmacy itself in the gift department into her 80s. She enjoyed working and preferred to be out and about rather than staying at home.
After her family, Dorothy’s love was music and her dogs. She was a member of the Glee Club in high school and participated in a number of school performances. Her appreciation of music would continue all of her life. She visited New York with her son and saw a number of Broadway shows. In recent years, she could be found in her daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Mike Golden’s, box at almost any of the many entertainment performances at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. She also travelled to Las Vegas to see shows as the guest of her daughter and son-in-law.
Her love of animals, mostly dogs, went back many years to her first dog, a Boston Terrier called Bootsie. There would be many more, mostly abandoned animals with some being injured on the side of the road. She would not hesitate to stop, pick up an injured or stray dog, take it to the vet, and bring it home.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Archer Lloyd George, and her brother, Leonard “Buster” Noack.
Survivors: She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Clarence “Buck” Gay and sister-in-law, Marian Noack.
