Dorothy carried the festive spirit of her birthplace, New Orleans through all of her endeavors. She grew up in Texas City and was profoundly affected by the 1947 Texas City disaster, in which her father assisted in the response. An only child, her mother conveyed a love of music to her which inspired many of her future activities.
She graduated from Stephens College in Missouri and The University of Texas with degrees in music and social work.
Dorothy spent many years volunteering for Young Audiences of Houston and as an archivist for the Houston Opera. She also volunteered for over twenty-five years at the Information Desk at Methodist Hospital and sang in the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church Choir for most of her adult life.
Her love of travel took her around the world as she visited China, Russia, India, and other places too numerous to list. She last lived at the Buckingham, where her kind consideration for and deep appreciation of the vast backgrounds of others made her a treasured neighbor and friend.
A thoroughly engaged citizen, she exercised her right to vote and wrote letters to various representatives when called to speak her mind.
But the achievement she was most proud of and into which she poured her deepest affection was the four children she and her beloved husband Walter proudly raised. Dorothy is survived by her daughter Mary McCaine and her husband Michael Brockmyre of Sugar Land, Texas; son, James McCaine and his wife Teres McCaine of Austin, Texas; son-in-law John Jinishian of Palo Alto, California; and granddaughters Zoe Jinishian of Los Angeles, California and Erin Jinishian of Asheville, North Carolina.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband Walter J. McCaine, Jr., her daughter, Martha McCaine Jinishian, and son, Richard McCaine.
A Celebration of Dorothy’s Life is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 7th of May at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road in Houston.
