Dorothy (also called Dotsy) was born on February 24, 1932 in Jersey City, New Jersey. She and her beloved father (Daddy), Byron Dow Thompson, moved to Sarasota, Florida, in 1958 and then to Houston in 1961. She spoke often of her beloved mother, Elsie Marie Swanson Thompson, who died in 1953 in New Jersey. Dotsy missed her mother very much.
Dorothy was employed by and retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. She was an avid baseball fan beginning, with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and, then the Houston Astros when she moved to Houston. She, along with her Daddy, were long time members of Lazybrook Baptist Church since 1961, where she helped to teach children’s Sunday School and served in the children’s nursery. She later joined Kingwood 1st Baptist Church when she moved to the Kingwood area of Houston in 2013.
Dorothy never married. Instead, she lived with her Daddy and later in life was the primary caregiver for him until his death in 1994, just prior to his 100th birthday. Dorothy dearly loved her siblings: Alice Marie Thompson Hicks (older sister, who preceded her in death in 2011); and William (Bill) E. Thompson (younger brother who preceded her in death in 1990). Her brother-in-law Elwood C. Hicks (husband to Alice Marie Thompson Hicks) preceded her in death in 2011. Dorothy’s sole survivor of her immediate family is sister-in-law Willie Nell Thompson (wife of the late William [Bill] E. Thompson).
Dorothy very much loved her five nieces and nephews: Kenneth Hicks, Janice Hicks Alban Washburn, William (Bill) E. Hicks (children of Elwood and Alice Hicks) and Joe Thompson, Julie Thompson McCullough (children of Bill and Willie Nell Thompson). She treated them like they were her own children. She also loved her many great nieces and great nephews who live in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and Colorado (three of the great -nephews are now in heaven).
Dotsy loved to talk on the phone (see her picture). She loved to give gifts and spent much time shopping for others and helping others. She gave generously to her church and supported gospel ministries around the world. Her heart was soft and loving. She was shy; however, she also liked to talk about her family and Jesus to everyone.
Dotsy was a firm believer in Jesus Christ. She looked forward to her seeing family who preceded her in their graduations to heaven. She longed for the rapture of the saints in conjunction with the second coming of Jesus. She often repeated the words of Revelation 11:12 “And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, ‘Come up hither.” Nevertheless, while living on this earth, Dorothy, though shy and timid by nature, purchased and gave many Christian books and reminders to people near and far away. Although she did not like to pray out loud, she spent many hours in prayer for her family and others. Dorothy (Dotsy) Thompson, Beloved Aunt!
