Born the 26th of December 1915, in Eastland, Texas, to Frank E. and Rose Day, Dorothy graduated at 16 from Eastland High School. After a year of college, she went to work in Eastland during the Depression. She later moved to Baytown, Texas, to work as a secretary for Humble Oil and Refining Company where she met Russell H. Venn. They married in 1949, moved to Houston in 1950, and there they raised their two daughters, Victoria “Vicki” and Cynthia “Cindy”. Dorothy and Russell were active members of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, where Dorothy served on and was president of the Altar Guild. They belonged to Lakeside Country Club, where she was an avid golfer. After Russell’s death in 1975, Dorothy volunteered many hours of her time at the St. John’s Guild Shop. She loved playing bridge, sewing, cooking, painting and gardening.
Dorothy was a loving and supportive wife who dedicated her life to raising her daughters. She supported them in their school and extracurricular activities, and was a very patient Blue Bird and Camp Fire Girls Leader. Dorothy lived the last seven years of her life at The Hampton at Tanglewood, where all knew her by her bright smile, her sense of humor, and her cat. In addition to her husband and her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her two sisters, Edna Day Conner of Eastland, Texas, and Elizabeth Day Dean McGuffey of Athens, Texas. She is survived by her daughters Victoria Venn Lange and husband John of Houston and Cynthia Venn of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania; grandsons Jack Lange and wife Laura, Jim Lange and wife Natalie, and Joe Lange; and nephews Clark Conner, Earl Conner, Jr., Mike Dean and niece Melinda Dean Johnson.
Her daughters are very grateful to the staff at The Hampton and ICS Hospice. We are grateful to Sydney Mae Young for her service and friendship. We are blessed that we had additional special angels who cared for our mom: Zulma Bonilla, Brynda Calcador, Rosa Cardona, Herlinda Santana, and Elizabeth Zacarias.
Dorothy led a full and meaningful life. She will be missed by all who knew her. Her grandsons Jack Lange, Jim Lange, Joe Lange and nephew Clark Conner will serve as honorary pall bearers.
