

Dorris Stell Sims Gentry, 94, is lovingly remembered by her family and friends after passing away on Monday, March 9, 2015 after a brief illness. Dorris, affectionately known as Granny, was born on October 3, 1920 in Houston, Texas, to parents Annabelle and Scott Hollyfield. She grew up and graduated from high school in Corpus Christi, then moved back to Houston where she met and married James Wilbur Gentry in 1940. They moved to Highlands where they worked and raised their family. After retiring from Diamond Shamrock in 1982 she delighted in traveling, challenging friends to a lively game of dominoes, volunteering in her community and spending time with family.
Dorris will always be remembered as a beautiful Christian, who taught those who knew and loved her about acceptance, unconditional love, compassion and unselfishness. She also had a keen sense of humor, fun loving spirit and a vibrant passion for life.
Dorris was a woman of deep faith and held a special place in the hearts of her friends at Highlands United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed giving of her time and talents for 70 years. She continued to touch the lives of her new friends at her final homes at Plantation Villas and Elmcroft Assisted Living in Lake Jackson. The family wishes to thank them as well as the staff of Altus Hospice for the extraordinary care and love of our mother.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 37 years, her brother Scott Sims, and her grandson James Gregory Gentry. She is survived and missed by her children, Jim Gentry and Scott Gentry of Houston, and Cisi and Ron Pisklak of Lake Jackson. Also surviving her are grandchildren Gena and Dean Hutto, Janet and Jay Gentry, John Gentry, Paige and Jeff Atha, Carrie and Ben Pisklak, Sarah and Mike Vandaveer, Stacey and Paul Pisklak, Alex , Jake , and Jordan Gentry, as well as 19 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 10-11 am on Thursday, March 12, at Highlands United Methodist Church, 107 W. Houston St., Highlands, TX 77562. Services will begin at 11:00am with a luncheon to follow. Interment will be at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston. If you should wish, memorials may by sent to Highlands United Methodist Church in Dorris’ name.
