Edward James Helton, 81, entered eternal rest on December 27, 2018 in Houston TX. He was born in Jeffersonville , IN on June 16, 1937 to his parents Charles and Ann Helton, the third of nine children. They would later move to San Antonio TX. He grew up an Army son in Fort Sam Houston where his father was stationed. He graduated high school from Helen Young Academy and then later enlisted in the US Navy after seeing a picture of an air traffic controller in a magazine at the barber shop. After serving four years in the Navy stationed at Kingsville Naval Air Station, he began working for the FAA at the center in San Antonio. He met and married the love of his life, Dixie Bullock, while living in San Antonio on a blind date. They were married on December 22, 1961. While living in San Antonio their first child, GiGi, was born. When the FAA relocated the center to Houston, they packed up and moved to Houston. His second child was born in Houston, Tony, or as he called him “Butch”. Jim became very involved in his community helping to set up the Imperial Valley Watch Patrol and later becoming the president of the Maintenance Corporation. He would later go on to help establish the first Houston Police Storefront location in North Houston. He also served as President of the Band Parents Booster Club at Aldine High School. Somehow, he still made time to play golf at least twice a week, sometimes more. He also enjoyed tennis, softball, and time on the lake skiing with family. He also enjoyed going to the casino with Dixie and later with GiGi and Tony. He retired after 50 years of service with the FAA. Jim was a member of Beautiful Savior Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where he served as an usher.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ann Helton; siblings: Sally and husband Wayne Jackson, Mildred and husband Phillip Hammerschmidt, JoAnn and husband JC Richey, Letha Cordes, Sam Helton, Michael Helton. Left to cherish his memory, wife of 57 years Dixie Helton; children: GiGi and Tony Helton; grandchildren: Jared Batla, Connor Helton, and Emma Helton.
Jim was lovingly known as "Pi" to his siblings, nieces and nephews. Surviving siblings: Douglas Helton and wife Karla, Patricia McCarty and husband Tom. Sisters-in-law: Barbara Helton and Joyce Helton and a host of nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 19, 2019 at
Beautiful Savior Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1804 N. Spring Dr. Spring TX 77373.
