Elizabeth “Ellen” Hayhurst was born on December 7, 1927 in Texas City, Texas to Clark Randall Hayhurst & Catherine Helen Hayhurst. Ellen was the second of two children. Ellen’s brother, Ross, was killed in WWII at the age of 27. After his death, the family moved to Houston,Texas.
Ellen attended and graduated from Jefferson Davis High School, where she had been a member of the National Honor Society.
When she was 19 years old, she met and married Curtis Bernard Bennick. The union produced 3 children, Peggy Ellen, Ross Byron, and Jo Ann Bennick. Ellen and Curtis were loving and devoted parents. They attended and raised all 3 of their children at Little York Baptist Church.
Ellen served as PTA President at Barrick Elementary and also later worked in the Attendance Office at Sam Houston High School.
Curtis and Ellen were happily married for almost 47 years when Curtis passed away in 1993 from a heart attack. Years later, Ellen remarried Pastor Robert “Bob” Clogston. They were both widowed and blessed to have found one another. They were happily married for almost 7 years when Bob passed away from cancer. The last couple of years of Ellen’s life after her health began to fail, she wanted to be “home” with family rather than living alone. With the love and support of all of her family, this was accomplished.
God called Ellen home on Sunday, September 18th, 2016 at 6:58 a.m. She passed peacefully at home and entered Heaven into the arms of Jesus. She will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.
Ellen is survived by her three children; Peggy Reyna, Ross Bennick and his wife, Laura, Jo Ann Borman and her husband, Ronnie, her 4 grandchildren; Gina Reyna, Ashlee Bennick, Emily Sanders, and Brady Bennick, and her 2 Great Grandchildren, Skylar and Drake Sanders.
